The Pao effect is a term coined in 2015.It is named after Ellen Pao who sued her employer for gender discrimination in 2012. The lawsuit prompted an increase in the number of women speaking up about workplace discrimination, and several employment lawyers said that the number of gender discrimination lawsuits had increased.
