Karen Franklin is a American researcher who is regarded as an expert in the field of forensic psychology. Her published research examined hate crimes and homophobia and she has written over 3,000 newspaper articles on these and related subjects. She serves as an expert witness in criminal trials, evaluates criminal defendants, particularly sex offenders as well as defendants facing possible execution, evaluates prisoners for the risk of violence, and conducts competency evaluations and mental status exams. She researchs issues such as the psychological basis for anti-gay hate crimes, hebephilia, ethics in forensics issues, criminal justice decisions, false confessions, and other topics. She teaches forensic psychology at Alliant International University and taught a course on sexual violence at San Francisco State University. She received the Distinguished Scientific Achievement in Psychology award in 2012 and the Monette/Horwitz trust award in 2001.
