Whoever is elected will serve as Governor from 2007 to 2011. The incumbent, Democrat Phil Bredesen, won his party's nomination to run for re-election. As of July 17, Bredesen has an approval rating of 57%. Governor Bredesen's most serious opposition in the general election is Republican state senator Jim Bryson of Franklin. Another Republican candidate, Mark Albertini, was arrested in Knoxville on July 21, 2006, on charges of public intoxication following a GOP rally.

Primaries
Both parties held their primary elections on August 3, 2006.
Democratic Governor Bredesen easily defeated the opposition, gaining 88.6% of ballots cast. Perennial candidate John Jay Hooker (also running for the Senate nomination) gained 7.2%, Tim Sevier recieved 2.6% of the vote, and Walt "Combat" Ward got 1.7% of the votes cast.
The Republican primaries were only slightly more competitive. Frontrunner Jim Bryson, who filed papers to enter the race at the last minute, gained an even 50.0% of the vote. David M. Farmer got 15.8%, Joe Kirkpatrick got 10.7%, Mark Albertini got 9.2%, Wayne Bailey got 7.5%, Wayne Young got 3.7%, and Timothy Thomas got 3.0% of the ballots cast.
