Nickolas Varvaris (born 25 May 1974) is an Australian politician. He has been a Liberal member of the Australian House of Representatives, representing the Division of Barton in New South Wales since September 2013. He is best known for falling asleep in Parliament and accidentally voting with the opposing Labor party in 2014.
Early years and background
Varvaris was born a twin child in a Greek migrant family of five children, in Sans Souci, New South Wales. He owned his own local business before entering politics. He was also a councillor of the Kogarah City Council from 1999 and was the mayor from 2008.
He is married with two children.
Controversy
Following the redistribution of NSW seats by the Australian Electoral Commission in October 2015, the proposed boundary changes turned Barton into a notionally Labor seat, high profile Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese has considered switching from the neighbouring seat of Grayndler to challenge Varvaris.
The electoral commission received a pair of identical submissions with almost identical handwriting, containing an impassioned plea for a rethink of the proposed boundary changes to the seat of Barton by his parents, John and Ourania Varvaris. "Leave our boy's seat alone: Parents of Barton MP Nick Varvaris appeal to AEC". Fairfax Media. Retrieved 17 November 2015.</ref>
