Stemnitsa (Greek: Στέμνιτσα) is a village and a municipality located in northwestern Arcadia. It is also the seat of the municipality of the same name. GR-74 is about 20 km S. It is located about 9 km S of Dimitsana, SW of Levidi and Vytina, W of Tripoli, and N of Megalopoli and Dimitsaina and W of Tripoli. Its nearest community are Dimitsana to the north and Zygoviti to the SE. It is considered one fo the most beautiful villages in Arcadia. The village name originates from the Slavic word meaning, a thick forest shaded with trees. In ancient times until the Black Plague, the village was known as Hypsous. In the 1500s, it was the most populated village in Gortynia.
The village has a school, a church, a post office, a square (plateia) and a folklore museum. The village is located on eastern slope of the valley which has a small creek to its east and the residential area covers the eastern part of a mountain. Another mountain is located to its west and southeast. Most of the area to its south and west is deforested.
Until the 1960s, much of the the village did not have electricity and until the 1980s, most of the houses were stone-built.
