Purpose of use

The attempted destruction of Nelson's Pillar on 8 March 1966 is a central issue within the article and is fully discussed in the text. Readers' understanding of the nature and extent of the damage will be greatly enhanced by this image.

Replaceable?

No. The remnant of the Pillar was blown up and removed by the Irish army a few days after the original explosion. Although the National Library of Ireland has declared "no known restrictions" on the use of this image, given that it was taken only 50 years ago there is a high probability that it is not free of copyright in the Republic of Ireland. The same applies to other images taken at the same time.
