Nickolas Varvaris (born 25 May 1974) is an Australian politician. He has been a Liberal member of the Australian House of Representatives, representing the Division of Barton in New South Wales since September 2013, having achieved a swing of over 7% to the government.
Early years and background
Varvaris was born a twin child in a Greek migrant family of five children, in Sydney, New South Wales. A BBus (UTS), CPA graduate, he owned his own local business before entering politics. He was also a councillor of the Kogarah City Council from 1999 and was the mayor from 2008. During his mayoralty the Sydney suburb of Kogarah was upgraded to city status and won the international award of the most livable city in its category.
He is a keen supporter of the Greek community that constitute a large part of his constituency and has brought many into the Liberal party as shown by the support of the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and local Greek Orthodox parish priest in Greek community events. Since his election, he has continued to be a member of Kogarah City Council. However in three years, he has only attended 30% of council meetings.
He is married with two children.
2016 Federal Redistribution
As part of the process of seats redistribution, the electoral commission received hundreds of submissions by constituents supporting retaining the Barton boundaries. These included two written by his parents and numerous Greek Australians. He will not recontest Barton in the 2016 federal election.
