Regional Municipalities of Ontario
Regional Municipalities of Ontario

The Ontario Provincial Government currently maintains the following eight (8) regional municipalities: (regional seats are listed in brackets)

  • 1) Durham Regional Municipality (Whitby)
  • 2) Halton Regional Municipality (Milton)
  • 3) Muskoka District Municipality (Bracebridge)
  • 4) Niagara Regional Municipality (Thorold)
  • 5) Oxford County (Woodstock)
  • 6) Peel Regional Municipality (Brampton)
  • 7) Waterloo Regional Municipality (Kitchener)
  • 8) York Regional Municipality (Newmarket

Regional municipalities (or regions) are upper-tier municipalities usually implemented from census divisions of interconnected clusters where urban centres form the majority of the division's area and population is not so clearly dominated by a single municipality. Although Oxford County and the District Municipality of Muskoka are not titled as such, they are both legally considered Regional Municipalities under Part 1, Section 1 of the Ontario Municipal Act (http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/DBLaws/Statutes/English/01m25_e.htm).
