Shiran Gooneratne is a Judge of the High Court of Sri Lanka. Before being appointed a judge he served as a State Counsel in the Attorney General's department of Sri Lanka. Judge Gooneratne came into prominence because of his lone decision to acquit all suspects in the murder trial of Sri Lankan politician Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra. It was alleged, before the verdict was announced, that Judge Gooneratne was involved in a conspiracy to acquit the main suspect Duminda Silva, who was alleged to have strong connections to the drug trade in Sri Lanka. Details of Judge Gooneratne's alleged involvement in this case have been reported in the Sri Lankan press after the verdict was announced.
