RFA Thank You's

Just a quick "thank you" for voting me for admin. Now all I've got to do is find out how to use these worrying new powers... Grutness| 06:19, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hi BlankVerse,

I would like to thank you for your vote of support and confidence for my adminship, it has been much appreciated. If you need anything in future that requires my attention, please do not hesitate to contact me. :)

- Cheers, Mailer Diablo 18:29, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Let me add my thanks for your support in my nomination as well. I look forward to helping out. - BanyanTree 04:12, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for supporting me on my RfA. It's always nice to get some positive feedback. I hope I can put my new abilities to some good use. -- grm_wnr Esc 17:39, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi BlankVerse. Thank you for supporting my recent RfA. I was surprised and humbled by the number of positives votes. I'll be monitoring RfA regularly from now on and will look for a chance to "pay it forward". In light of your comments, I'll also try to play an active role in trying to help SchmuckyTheCat, Huaiwei and Instantnood resolve their differences. Cheers, --MarkSweep 02:32, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for supporting my RFA. It couldn't have happened without your effort. FeloniousMonk 18:06, 15 August 2005 (UTC)

My successful bid for adminship (64-2). — FREAK OF NURxTURE (TALK) 06:46, Dec. 17, 2005

I don't have a fancy layout like other new admins, but I just want to thank you for your support at my RfA. It passed 47/3/1, so I have officially been promoted. I hope I won't let you down. If I'm not doing something properly, please tell me. Aecis 21:27, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

Those what kind of boxes? <glares>  ;-) Tomer 06:12, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for your support on my RfA.

Unfortunately, it failed to reach consensus. Nonetheless, it proved an opportunity to establish contacts and cooperation with many supportive editors, which will be beneficial to editing Misplaced Pages in the future. Lulu of the Lotus-Eaters (t @)

Okay, this is perhaps a bit overdue, but thank-you for your support in my recent RfA! I passed with a final vote count consensus of (82/1/0), which was a lot of support that I really appreciate. I'll try to live up to the expectations; and on that note, if there's ever something I do wrong (or don't do right), please spit in my general direction. Cheers! --PeruvianLlama 05:31, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks

Hi BlankVerse! Thanks for the compliment on the Presidio article; I'll put it in the DYK queue (usually I forget). Compliments are rare here, and I really appreciate it.

Btw, couldn't agree more with the first comment on your user page: "...mourning the loss of civility and and the loss of too many good editors from the Misplaced Pages." It's true, and this has been bugging me for some time. There's ten times more complaining about bad behavior, and organized pillories and punishments, than rewards and kudos. Not sure what to do about it, but losing good editors to burnout is a bad thing. Peace and happy editing, Antandrus (talk) 14:48, 23 August 2005 (UTC)

About rotating the photo of the New Otani...

Hello:

Rotating the photo is fine. I wish I had a higher quality original but unfortunately, my digital camera at the time was a real piece of junk (I have a better one now, as you may have noticed from my recent uploads). --Coolcaesar 17:31, 30 August 2005 (UTC)

KRCD

It might not be total booshwah, but it isn't terribly accurate AFAIK. There's an "X-103.1" alternative station in San Bernardino but I don't know the call letters. 103.1 out here is soft rock and 103.9 is a translator for a classic rock station at 106.9 in Yucca Valley. I may Google "X 103.1" when I have a moment. Work's kind of hectic this morning.  :) - Lucky 6.9 17:41, 15 September 2005 (UTC)

Lots of edits, not an admin...

I'm terribly sorry, but I think I may have accidently knocked you off the list while moving users from the 2.5k list to the 5k list or 7.5k list as needed - a lot of cutting and pasting (although I can't find the diff, so maybe I didn't, but...). I'm going to make it up to you right away, tho, by nominating you for an adminship. I'll give you 12 hours from the time of this post to decline the offer (or prepare your answers). Cheers! -- BD2412 02:37, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

List of California State Routes

Remember when you said:

Listify and then delete before someone gets the bold idea to do the same for California. A mess of numbers is practically meaningless, while a good list (see List of California State Routes) can be much getter than either categories or navigation boxes.

Imdaking

I've been investigating the alarming behaviour of this user, including his violation of several of our policies, and plan to start on the most appropriate form of dispute resolution as soon as I have prepared some evidence. Part of that evidence is contained in the abusive comments this user has made towards you.

I would therefore like to extend an invitation to you to advise me of any other users you are aware of that Imdaking has been particularly foul towards. Everything I have is going on User:Robchurch/Imdaking. All help would be appreciated, and if you would like to join me in whatever action I decide to take, you are most welcome to do so.

This user's behaviour is not acceptable. Rob Church 23:19, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

Thank you! I only just realised (despite watching the page) that you'd posted a load of suggestions on User_talk:Robchurch/Imdaking. Thanks for all that, I'll sort some more stuff out soon. Yes, I am going to start with an RfC. Rob Church 12:28, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

Interwiki links

BV, I am not sure I understand what is different about your suggestion from what I am currently doing. See the top of my user page here. Is it not the same thing? I have a menu linking to each page in every language. It appears on the top of all the pages. Take a look and see if this is what you meant.

I even added arrows so you can easily "tour" the pages by just following the arrows from link to link.

Ah, yes! Now I know what you are talking about. That is very cool! I do think I will use both methods for now.
I saw an example of this for the first time yesterday, but I only noticed the addition to the bottom of the page (where categories go), not on the sidebar. If you go to my article which was translated into Hungarian yesterday, you will see the link on the side. I noticed the code being added yesterday, but didn't noticed the sidebar link. Totally cool:

"SF".com links

Hi BlankVerse. Am I right to remove the commercial "SF".com links added by 203.84.186.182? I saw that you edited the CUSD article after I removed the link. The anonymous user has since replaced the reverted links on both that article and the LAUSD article. Mike Dillon 14:54, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

Note to User:203.84.186.182, User:Cooldude1234, etc.: I'll revert any removal of the name SF.com from my personal talk page. BlankVerse 08:32, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

Read Mike Dillions page. He understands the issue and has complied with our requests.. regarding this issue.. we are also in the process of discussing this with the board.. We made a mistake of having our contractors post relevant links on wikipedia even tho they are non commercial and have to do with school information. I guess we made a mistake and wikipedia doesn't want us to offer relevant school information for those schools. Since thats the case, we have ceased after those two links to post any more links. I kindly request you stop post the name SF in your comments. The main reason for this is my client and our users when they type in our name on any search engine because of the great ranks wikipedia has these comments come up. Its not like I'm trying to vandalize your comments its just i believe wikipedia should be used as its intending to promote good content that people want to read and enjoy not derogatory remarks that hurt my client and our users. Thank you for your cooperation. Have a great day :) -Cooldude1234

If anyone is curious about what this is about, they can check the edit history of my talk page
To the "SF".com links folks and their contractors: If what you were offering on your website was freely viewable on the internet without any obligatrions on the part of the viewers and without masses of commercial links accompanying the info, then I would have no objections to including links to your website on the Misplaced Pages. There are already a few websites that do provide a wealth of information on many US schools and school districts in such a format, so I have been thinking about creating a couple of templates for use by the Schools WikiProject to be added to schools and school district articles. You should read the Misplaced Pages policies on external links for more information on what is relavant for adding as an external link to articles on the Misplaced Pages. 204.108.96.10

Sure. I'll help you out as much as I can. Would the IP necessarily be limited to that particular computer or could it be for the whole school? I could probably check this out myself by just seeing if different computers have different IPs at the school. Understand of course that there are over 3,000 students at the school. It is unlikely that anyone would get into any computer-related trouble. The school lacks the skill and presonnel that would be required to enforce its internet policies. The computer that I was at when I wrote that reply is in a pretty open classroom where a lot of students use the computer. (It's also where we produce the school newspaper.) I'm not in the room much of the time, but I could look at when the IP is active on here and have the teacher tell me who's often on the computer at that time. Theshibboleth 05:10, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

Well in that case, I don't think I could be of much help. I'm just not sure the system administrators would really care enough to try to deal with problem editors in a rational manner. More likely, it seems to me, if they did anything it would be to not allow anyone to access Misplaced Pages or some such nonsense. I'm not really sure if they'd be able to do this though because last time I checked the internet censorship for LAUSD was managed by a third party. The problem is that even if is the system administrators would understand the problem, they do not enforce restrictions to internet access for individual students. In theory, only students who have agreed to use the internet in a responsible with many (somewhat overly broad) limitations, are allowed to do so. In theory, if a student violates those limitations, he or she will be barred from internet access. In practice, this is unenforcable. It would require that all teachers babysit their students while they are using the internet. This is something most teachers have neither the time nor the interest to do. I assume you have the contact information for the system administrators? The only solution I see, and it's a time-consuming one, is to manually check the IP's recent edits and correct any vandalism. I'll start helping out with this myself. The other thing would be find out what all the LAUSD IPs are so they don't get blocked. Theshibboleth 16:04, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

Dear BlankVerse,

After considering all that you have done for me as a fairly new user, I wish to grant you with a Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar. If you feel this is in need, please tell me so and I will send it to you. If you feel that your acts are not worthy, then I suppose I will understand. Ronald 20

First, i love your "Use Misplaced Pages at your own risk" poster. It is very pertinent with regard to the science articles.

Second, I just wanted your opinion with regard to the anon user who also appears to be ronald20. I have reverted a few of his edits, even when they look like they might be correct. He seems to always add made up nonsense. Are there examples where he actually contributes with factual information?

I have to say that users like Ronald could be a big problem for wikipedia. We can't verify all these types of edits and it is quite easy for the misinformation to build up. Misplaced Pages already has a credability problem with this regard and when vandals start to become more sophisticated it will be tough to keep it current and correct. Does wikipedia have a policy on how to policy such random edits? David D. (Talk) 22:00, 27 October 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the long explanation. I have encountered a similar user in the sports pages. Despite months of attempts at communication there was not a peep from the editor. Eventually I started tweeking the edits he made into a style that was a compromise style and low and behold he actually did copy it. So I think you are right to hold out some hope. Did you notice that I created a template of your disclaimer? See Template:UWAYOR. Maybe you can make changes there and then if others decide to use it too every ones page will be updated simultaneously.
Thanks for the rants links, I share many of those frustrations too. One that really scares me is that other web sites copy verbatim the wiki pages and present them as factual information. Not to mention that many naive users seem to think if it's on the web it must be true. It worries me that wiki half truths are disseminated as facts. Misplaced Pages should worry too since their reputation could easily take a plunge if it gets out of hand. The least the can do is make the disclaimers more prominent. In that regard you should check out this page and discussion too (Misplaced Pages:Proposed_update_of_MediaWiki:Tagline). It is a few months old but shares some of your concerns. David D. (Talk) 04:51, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
By the way , notice what Jimbo Wales had to say about a more prominent disclaimer. Something to hide?David D. (Talk) 04:54, 28 October 2005 (UTC)
"I think that you should consider Hanlon's Razor" I hadn't considered that but it would make sense too. For me the more we acknowledge the 'crap' the better. One thing for sure is that wiki has a long way to go, but, i have also learned a lot from the info in wikipedia. It could be (is) a fantastic resource and at the moment I am optimistic it will become useful in my area of interest, science. David D. (Talk) 05:41, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

Black Page

You have good points. As a new user to wikipedia, I've been suprised to notice that the best articles tend to be the more obscure ones. The bigger pages tend to self destruct through opinionized and anti-opinionised editing, which seems to result in a lot of words and a lot of trivia, but not much substance! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sansvoix (talkcontribs) (UTC)

Kaibab comments

Thanks for the welcome, BlankVerse, and I appreciate the links (I hope I've been within the starndards of civility, as I certainly aim to be--especially since I was drawn to the idea of Misplaced Pages based on the idea of open discussion--and like what you had to say in you Black Box as well, despite the fact that I have only a vague notion of its meaning). As per the user ang for Old English I had wanted to put ang-0 to denote that I have dabbled in the language and understand its concepts, but couldn't reasonably speak or understand it. I'm assuming that that template hasn't been created either--as someone quite interested in the linguistics pages, I thought that the xx-0 was perfect for dead languages that one may have studied the grammars of, but could't not actually speak. Thanks again!Kaibab 03:45, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

Thanks again for the links. It's funny too that you point out how to create links to other lanaguage user sites as I think I discovered how to do that while you typing. As per my open discussion comment, I meant mearly during the editing process, i.e., the discussion page. I like that people seem to be intent on discussing things (civilly) before making rampant edits. It allows a consensus to be formed, and I think leads to a superior encyclopedic article. And, after having done more indepth exploring of the encyclopedia, I can more readily see which articles are excellent examples the original concept of encyclopedia, and which articles require refinement.
I also had a few questions regarding etiquette. It would appear that most communication between users when not related to a specific article is done in the users 'talk' or 'discussion' page, and I see that you requested I put new comments at the bottom. I only put my old one where I did previously for organization, but after having recieved your messages better understand how the communication system works (I hadn't seen the 'you have new messages' before). Does the user then cut and paste comments such as mine to better organize their page? And, my second qeustion, is it appropriate for me to be burdening you with mundane questions such as these, or is there some general page I can go to similar to the one on civility or how to edit a page?Kaibab 07:23, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

Sakura, Kigo

I have a question for you. On the day that the picture Magical Sakura was featured on the front page, several people expressed dissatisfaction with the picture's manipulated nature. They would like to change the picture to something more technical, which I understand. In the meantime, I'm trying to convince them not to, but in case such a thing should happen, I wonder: Do you think that the picture would be better suited for the Kigo article? I'm asking your opinion because you seem to have done a lot of work there. I would have to have my nice picture become orphaned, but the people do have a point about the unencyclopedia nature of the picture withn the Sakura article itself, especially the picture's presence in the taxobox.

Any advice is appericiated.PiccoloNamek 01:04, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

school disambiguation

This is a major issue. I actually discovered this when doing the Charlotte Public Schools page experiment. Fortunately there seems to now be a consensus on how schools should be named. ie. Washington Elementary School (Charlotte, Michigan). One of the major points i have been trying to make to the school deabte is that by first creating lists, with redirect pages for each school, the disambiguation pages and school pages can be established. THEN, people can worry about the content. At the moment i just see lots of random school articles with no context.

Recently i just checked my local madison high schools on a massive list that the school project was planning to use to create more school stubs, see Wikipedia_talk:Schools/Archive_3#Discussion_of_these_or_other_ideas. On that page i posted the following observation.

In summary i think your points about a disambiguation template need to be brought up sooner than later. Especially since, believe it or not, the school debate may well be close to a consensus!!!!!! David D. ] 16:51, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

I agree that Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Schools pages are so disfunctional. In fact, I have no idea how i got sucked into it since my real reason for being here is to get the science pages more accurate. Thanks for the help with the signature. I'll make some suggestion in the school discussion re: disambiguation citing some of the examples you pointed out as well as the flaws in relying on blue/red link lists. Cheers David D. Oxnard

I have nearly completed my research on gang injunctions in Oxnard. Look for it soon. 8)--Rockero 17:24, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

Howdy, actually I put the "Attention" tag after seeing some smaller things such as spelling and grammatical errors. I've gone back and addressed these and have removed the tag myself. Sorry for the trouble, -- Gyrofrog (talk) 16:02, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Well, it wasn't much of a copyedit in the article's grand scheme, but I figure that grammar- and spelling-related edits make an article more readable (to me, anyway) while the content itself is sorted out. I see what you mean about the templates; I see some others such as "In Use" but they imply the work will only take place for a few minutes. The "Under Construction" is perhaps more applicable, but I've seen so many other websites that have displayed something like that for years. Anyway there's probably a good solution waiting to happen among all these templates... Happy editing, -- Gyrofrog (talk) 17:41, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

I see you noticed my additions to the Oxnard article. Thank you for helping edit the section. I have taken you up on the suggestion to write the article Gang injunction. If there is any way I can improve it, please let me know.--Rockero 21:27, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

Haiku page

Hello Blankverse;

I've touched the haiku page a bit - it should be looking better for anyone. The origin of haiku section is edited, errors corrected. Just FYI - I know you're busy with the Kigo page, which looks great.

As for the old pond translation, I replaced Blyth's with my own. First published in Kawazu Awase, a collection of one-on-one hokku matches on the subject of frogs, Bashō's 'old pond' hokku sings of a (or multiple) aurally perceived frog(s).

Best regards,

--Koast 11:01, 28 November 2005 (UTC)

I agree with you about giving subsections to Imagists and Beat poets. At the same time - I'm considering putting a substantial amount of articles on modern and contemporary haiku writers in Japan, since the "Modern Haiku" section is practically empty. I'll work on these slowly. Best, Koast 08:50, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Regarding the Classmates.com essay, I would prefer to refine it a bit more before it gets copied and pasted anywhere. To be clear on the motives of your suggestion, as I don't believe I've had any previous contact with you, which side are you on? I'm chuckling as I write this, not completely disregarding the possibility that I might soon be simultaneously lampooned on several projects as a bigoted, anti-intellectualist, or uber-deletionist zealot, none of which I consider myself, btw. — FREAK OF NURxTURE (TALK) 18:30, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Okay, I've read the involuntary exerpt, and I find the comparison to fancruft particularly damning, especially to those who use templates to blanket-vote keep on all school articles without reading them, which is part of what inspired my essay to begin with. I will do some more writing on it tonight, I think. I need to come up with a title that can be made into a catchy acronym. I'm thinking something that spells "SLICEDBREAD" would be excellent, but I'm struggling on it. By the way, feel free to revert the intentional red link at the top of your talk page if so desired. — FREAK OF NURxTURE (TALK) 19:14, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Hi, I have noticed that in the past you have edited or created a template for a television DMA (market) in North America, or have edited an articles about television stations. Currently their are several different styles of the template being used. Because of this i have set up a workshop to obtain input on setting up a common configuration for these templates. Feel free to assist at Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Television Stations/markets. Also while you are their, feel free to leave you name as a participant on the Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Television Stations as well as any comments you might have, to help wikipedia improve articles on television stations. I'll revert that back. That title isn't even correctly formatted. Unless KDIS has an FM affiliate, the proper syntax would be "KDIS-AM" and "KDIS-FM." Thanks for the tip. - Lucky 6.9 20:16, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

Will do. Just passing through right now, but I'll take a look ASAP. I changed that KDIS thing back to the original title and left word on the IP talk page as to what the proper formatting of broadcast call letters should be. Heck, I should know.  :) - Lucky 6.9 20:22, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

Minor Edit Codes

I have noticed that when some edits are made, people use certain shorthand codes to describe their edits. For example, I believe "rv" means "revert," and "sp" means "fixed a spelling error." Is there a Wiki page with these all listed? I would like to become familiar with them. In particular, I wonder if there is a shorthand for grammar or sentence structure edits. Soltras 08:24, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

I have another Edit Codes question. Sometimes when people revert I see the comment in the history says something like "Reverted to last version by so and so.." with clickable links and IPs if it was an anonymous user. Is there a command that creates that specific edit comment format? Soltras 07:53, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

Burrito

Hi, again. You added The filled burrito is then lightly grilled to Burrito. To the best of my knowledge, most traditional burritos are not prepared that way, so I'm interested in your sources or why you believe that they are. As far as I know, the tortillas are either briefly steamed or lightly grilled, removed from the steamer or grill, and placed on a plate or on aluminum foil (or both), and then filled. I'm sure there are variations on this theme, but I'm interested in your opinion. --Viriditas 08:54, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

I wasn't actually referring to a Bay Area-style burrito, nor am I familiar with any restaurants that grill the burrito after filling it. In fact, I've never heard of such a thing. I do know that there are variations on cooking methods, such as the deep-fried burrito (which is fully immersed in a fryer). Perhaps you could set the record straight and correct me with a good citation? I'm always willing to learn something new. Also, how exactly do you grill a full-size burrito without it falling apart, a problem which is compounded by the fact that it might contain cold products like chopped lettuce and sour cream, which for all intents and purposes you want to keep cool? I've had burritos in New Mexico and Mexico, but didn't notice if they were grilled or not. --Viriditas 09:16, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
Ok, I just found a place that grills the burrito after placing it in foil. It's called Taco Loco in Somerville, Massachusetts. Since steaming is common, it might be best to mention both. I'm starting to wonder just how common burrito grilling is, and whether we should place undue emphasis on this preparation method. --Viriditas 09:39, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
Hey, nice work on those edits. Thanks for taking my input into account. Now we can get down to business and argue about who makes the best burrito! Take care. --Viriditas 06:48, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:WikiProject Southern California/Los Angeles County to do

Neighborhoods list tightened to paragraph. I pruned out all of the blue links without reference to their stubbiness or not on the grounds that it's hard for new (or even old users) to tell which articles need attention mosts. Red links are an obvious "fill in this blank" come-on. I'd understand if you totally reverted, but I found the previous listing to be strangely discouraging without a clear demarcation between what needs to be started from scratch and what needs to be developed (and to what degree). Anyway, revert if that's what you feel is best, but IMHO the project is best served by separating "missing articles" from "stubby articles," which can attract different kinds of editors. Thanks for all you do. jengod 06:02, 19 December 2005 (UTC)

I am currently a senior at HBHS and did a major rewrite of the Huntington Beach High School article. The 1906 and 2004 sections are well-written because I used an old Oiler Times article (June 2004) for the 1906 section. The 2004 section is observation and informatio that I've heard around the school. The 1970s section however just sucks. Adminship

The problem with raising the bar for new admins is that it in no way addresses the problems people have with existing admins, nor the fact that people who have been admin for several months since their "promotion" may have changed in character, opinion and outlook, and may have become controversial even if they weren't before. I'm not opposed to RFA reform, but please realize that it actually has little to do with accountability of existing admins. Radiant_>|< 15:02, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

  • Please take a look at Misplaced Pages:Admin accountability poll. I think I'd like to pose those questions to the community. If it needs rewording or if I've missed something, I'd appreciate your opinion. Radiant_>|< 17:40, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
    • If, as you say, there had been a higher standard for admins, I agree that some of those admins who are now problems would have been prevented from becoming admins. But I think that most of those problematic admins did not become problematic until well into their adminship. People change. New users are bright, open and enthousiastic (to quote some cliches) and long-term users tend to get different personality traits. More set in their ways maybe, a bit jaded at times, or thoroughly stressed out for some. So I think we should have both higher standards for new admins, and uphold those standards for existing admins. The latter is especially tricky. Radiant_>|< 12:50, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

LA streets

I'm curious as to what is notable and non-notable. If you look at the category streets in New York, there are far more streets listed than in L.A. My minimum criteria for listing an L.A. street is a somewhat major thoroughfare, and/or has cultural significance. At this point, I have listed nearly every major street in Los Angeles and I may as well be done. Eskrima 01:01, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I agree that someone should create an article on that street due to its historical significance. As for 3rd St, I believe it does yield importance because it is a major thoroughfare (like the famous Wilshire Boulevard ) and contains many businesses that are popular among celebrities. If one were to include every "number street" in L.A. i.e. 2nd st, 4th st, 5th st, 6th st, etc., and these streets are certianly in existence, then I would agree with you about non-importance. Anyway, as I said, I have created pages for every major L.A. street I know, therefore, I am at completion or nearing it.

Template:PD-CAGov

Sourcing is not the issue, but licensing is, which is why I redirected to {{no license}} (instead of {{no source}}). But the real point is that this issue cannot be satisfactorily resolved on TfD at all. There is an underlying legal queation that can perhaps only be resolved through research and/or by consulting legal experts. I've sent a request to the Juriwiki-l mailing list, because this sort of issue has come up before and will come up again, and we don't have a good way of resolving it. Debating the license templates on TfD doesn't really address the fundamental problem, and in fact no amount of debate will, since the issue is not internal to Misplaced Pages.

I don't know whether SPUI's argument is ultimately convincing. However, it casts enough doubt on the PD claim that it should prompt us to investigate the situation and adopt a cautious attitude while it is being resolved. The redirect is intended as a temporary compromise: it signals that we're aware of the issue, and if it's confirmed that the template was indeed essentially correct, it can be easily reverted.

In general TfD isn't the right venue for this sort of discussion. I don't know if there currently is a proper place for a focussed discussion of licensing and copyright issues, but it's clear that TfD is not it. We may need to find/create another forum where these things can be discussed at a general level. In this case, someone needs to do the work of a lawyer or paralegal to find out details about the California situation. If a determination is made, perhaps even by the Foundation and/or Jimbo, that certain images cannot be used, then obviously the license templates can be deleted without going through TfD. In any case, what is needed is more research, expert advice, etc., not more debate on TfD. Until we have a good way of doing this properly, we have to be cautious, hence the present solution. --MarkSweep (call me collect) 07:42, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

Hurly-Burly and the B-bbbbbbarrell Kick

  • Long time, no say hi... so Hi! Love your talkpage top!
  • I kicked over the barrell boldly here in defence of guidelines, and will spam notify a few others in that debate as well.
  • I wonder if you will consider dropping me an email detailing some tips on what methods you use to keep up and track all this hurly-burly, as I am daunted by discovering just how many policy proposals are on the listing category, and frankly, 'Frank' doesn't quite know how anyone gets enough WikiTime to both spend time tracking and commenting on such as well as creating things added to wikipedia, much less keeps up with all that! Shudder!

and Wow! Best regards, FrankB 17:36, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

If I can trouble you for a little feedback

I also forgot to swing by and thankyou for the input on handling the policy deluges. Or is the 'ess' capitalized in that? I set one off myself tonight on the VP! See Template talk:welcome, and follow the link back, then the link to the pump.

re: Request some 'peer review' (Talkpage sections detailing concerns)] on new article: Arsenal of Democracy This post is being made Friday 14 April 2006 to a double handful (spam?) of admins & editors for some reactions, and advice (Peer Review) on this article, and it's remaining development, as I'd like to put it to bed ASAP. (Drop in's welcome too!) Your advice would be valuable and appreciated. Replies on talk link (above) indicated. Thanks! FrankB 20:30, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

  • I just ripped this off my talk cleaning up for a WikiDayOff tomarrow, and realized you weren't an invitee on the above. Apologies. I've gotten some good input, but can use more. Bear in mind to go to the talk section link first for the brief, then the article. The issue is really how to design an article covering the topic. This 'draft' just sort of 'happened', as is explained. (btw- if you don't like history, don't bother! <G>)

Sukh's RFA - Thanks!

Thank you for your vote on my RfA. Unfortunately there was no consensus reached at 43 support, 18 oppose and 8 neutral. I recently received this email

Fang Aili,

It has come to my attention that you have deleted the Polk Audio Misplaced Pages entry. We have been in contact with BlankVerse, the original administrator that placed a Copyright violation notice on the Polk Audio entry, and informed him that we have permission to use the text posted to the page. He informed us that Misplaced Pages would need our legal department or marketing boss to release our text to Misplaced Pages under the GFDL. Last week I met with our marketing president and informed him of the issue and he should be contacting BlankVerse very soon (if he hasn't already done so). Would it be possible to restore our Misplaced Pages entry?

Thanks,

Kris Siegel Office 410-764-5210 (or Ext 210) Web Development Intern PolkAudio, inc

Any idea what I should do with this? I'm sure the answers are on a policy page somewhere, but RL is interfering with my wiki time right now. Thanks. --Fang Aili 21:07, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Anaheim Hills

Would you vote on the Final Naming Poll on the Anaheim Hills, Anaheim, California page by Monday, June 6th at 11:00 pm pst. Signal Hill, California location map

Sure, feel free to do that if you think it will help show its location better. If you do make such a map, it would probably be a good idea to explain the color-coding in some way, such as in the image's caption or with a graphic-and-text color key. I could redo the map myself (as I think that is what you implied in your message); in that case, it might be a little bit before I get around to it. Bumm13 05:26, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Signal Hill

No worries... that's a great picture. As for the directories, I'm glad you like them. Those lists you gave me were really helpful. TheGrappler 16:03, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

It would be interesting to see the difference! Yes, the LoC panoramas are very interesting; I've also been interested by the large number of early stereographic images from the period, which also work really badly on Misplaced Pages unfortunately. As for the list of WikiProjects: as you may well have gathered, the idea of the Directory system is to produce a complete and up to date regional list in a central location, so it stops being being a PITA to find information about these things. My hope is that if there is a central location for all information about co-ordination and WikiProjects, people will keep that up to date, while they may not keep individual sublists up to date. That would only happen of course if the Directory started off in a comprehensive and useful fashion: if it becomes the place for recording all this co-ordination (there is a huge amount of it and as you have noticed, it's hard to keep track of and at present nobody seems to be trying to do so!) then hopefully it can help prevent unnecessary fragmentation and duplication. But we'll see :-) Any further advice you have would be great! TheGrappler 07:01, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Ratio vis a vis edit summaries

I've been unable to find any cases where the edit summary principles have really been used as ratio dicendi rather than just obiter dicta, except that I suppose to stretch a point one might say that the judgement in Gzornenplatz, Kevin Baas, Shorne, VeryVerily uses it as a ratio for the FoF that they failed to discuss reverts. --David.Mestel 16:14, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

Ugh, I think I get hit by the Google toolbar bug. I thought I had been pretty careful in watching for that, but it looks liked I missed it. Los Alamitos/ Rossmoor

Oh, I believe that Los Alamitos has included Rossmoor in its sphere of influence since 1990, I think todays meeeting was to renew it. Usually LAFCO posts an update from the meeting on this page after it finishes, but as of now, as far as the recorded facts go, Rossmoor is still part of the sphere of influence of Los Alamitos. I am hoping that within the next day, updates are reported on this page, and people will have the appropriate information to update the article accordingly. Regards. --69.232.62.33 10:33, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

]-I believe that it is explained the sphere of influence situation. It is kind of a weird setup, but Rossmoor is a weird community. It is part of their sphere of influence at times, but other times it seems not to be (in different aspects). If you dont find it to be sufficient, you can remove the paragraph, and we will just await the results of the hearing for a couple of days. Regards --Ericsaindon2 11:06, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Ressmoor Issue

Yes, I have worked with LAFCO and know the team on a personal level for several years, and conducted many projects with them, and still dont seem to understand what Rossmoor "is". The only identification it has is a CDP, but has a Los Alamitos zip code. I know that it is connected with the city on some aspects like the sewer district which bills the city for both the city and Rossmoor, as well as the water, electrical, and gas districts folllow this similar set up. The only aspect that isnt controlled by the city of Los Alamitos is the physical governing of the city (which seems possible here soon). I know Los Alamitos really wants the community, although they wont benefit from it. THey even offered to have a ROssmoor Community Council Member on their City Council tempting the community. Seal Beach is preferred to the Rossmoor residents, but the Seal Beach Government has not shown any interest in the community. I will try to reword it to explain this awkward situation.

As for Santa Ana Heights. Half of the community is part of Newport Beach already (annexed in 2003) and the other part is debating to be annexed, and the annexation is pending for the part attempting now. But the part switching to Newprort Beach now is almost 5 times smaller than the part of Santa Ana Heights that exists in Newport Beach since 2003. Yesterday, I believe that many aspcts of the annexation were confirmed with only little parts left for the annexation. I believe that 7 meetings have been conducted on the issue which finalized most of the deal, and I believe the last and final annexation meeting where the mayor will sign the official documents (more of a ribbon cutting ceremony thing than a discussion about issues) is set for September. So I believe that this was the last meetings of all the technicalities, and all 7 were successful. Contact me with any further comments or concerns. :) --Ericsaindon2 07:01, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

ArbCom

Thank you for the kind statements. But, I am not sure how me reading through the past verdicts will help the ArbCom decide if they want to pursue the case. The people that are opposed to my edits are very set in their mindset, and wont bend at all, soI thought it was best if I just wait it out. I would appreciate your comments on the issue, bucause as you know I do partake in many constructive edits, I just somehow managed to meet some people I didnt like, and the debate got out of hand. --Ericsaindon2 21:52, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

PS, I would appreciate it greatly if you could leave a comment on the ArbCom page, because they dont seem to believe I make any constructive edits based on the comments of the other parties involved (except user:OC31113 who is for my case). If you leave a message there, I would owe you big time. --Ericsaindon2 21:54, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

All fixed! I believe I have included all the technicalities, if something seems not to be right, I will rewrite or fix it, but just let me know. And sorry for not fixing that, I have been busy trying to defend my case on the Arbcom, but I was not putting this aside, I promise. Just let me know if there needs to be any more adjusting, and I will get on it. --Ericsaindon2 10:24, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Hello, User:Anaheimat keeps reverting the communities that were on the template for Orange County, California. I drew lines over an excisting trackmap found on google. — Preceding unsigned comment added by WikiPino (talkcontribs)

Thanks for the advice Mr. BlankVerse ;-).
In fact I discovered the disfunctional of replacing an image by trying to replace Image:Autodromo Nelson Piquet.gif. Earlier today I chose 'Upload a new version of this file'. The funny thing is, in the article List_of_Formula_One_circuits a thumbnail of this new version is displayed like it should be. But when I click on it I get the older version :S. Maybe you can pass this problem forward to Wiki-programmers?
By the way; I realize my selfmade image of Long Beach isn't that good right now. But I'm sure it would take much longer to make it look like one of the existing maps on the net :p Pino 14:05, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
Unfortunately, disabling the page cache didn't work for me. I wonder if you see any difference between the thumbnail and the original image (which is completely upsidedown!). Please let me know Pino 08:59, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for your feedback. I just saw the image has been changed, at last! I'll also try to make a better version of Long Beach.gif.

The latest

ES never fails to disappoint. Away for a month (at least on paper) and the now he's writing an article about a car dealership. Caliber Motors. Gee, just what Misplaced Pages needs. Maybe someone got a new job.

Regarding User talk:221.170.155.105 thanks for the alert. I had too many tabs open and thanked one whom I should have admonished. Fixed. Cheers, -Will Beback 09:29, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

You're always welcome to ask for a "clean-up on aisle 5". That's what the administrative mop is for. Yes, it may be time for you to get a mop of your own, but there isn't a hurry. If you ever desire to be promoted to janitor I'd be privileged to nominate you. -Will Beback 10:12, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Caliber Motors Image

That was taken by me. There is only one way to take the picture, so it is only accessable from that one shot. I took it on the "dealership initiation" day, and there were tons of people taking the picture from the exact same spot I was. Although it might appear to be the exact same image, various people took that same image, for they would not let residents past the chained spot. So, everyone got pretty much the same picture at the initiation day, so please ask before accusation. Ericsaindon2 01:13, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Even taken from the same spot, at the same moment, no two pictures are alike. That explanation is implausible to begin with, and is even more absurd considering the fact that the photo that you uploaded had the exact same, unusual dimensions as the photo on the Caliber Motors website, 551×233, as well as being the identical number of bytes, 41,565. -Will Beback 07:43, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
Upon examination of the file that ES uploaded, I find that they are exactly the same. Not only is every detail about the photograph iself identical, but the JPEG compression artifacts are also identical as is the total number of unique colors, 35,895. There is no possibility that the two images come from different sources. -Will Beback 08:30, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
There's no IPCT info, but every piece of info available is identical. The first and last pages of hex code are identical as well. -Will Beback
I amy have stolen your thunder by already adding the fresh evidence of ES's mendacity. But I'm sure you can phrase it better and add more. Note that Bauder has already proposed a one-year ban to be followed by probation. I expect that once the ArbCom gets around to voting they will adopt his proposals. -Will Beback 10:52, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Flash cuts

I asked 70.189.59.196 about the "flash cuts" and area codes. He sent me back a long explanation which convinced me that he is expert on the topic and knows exactly what he's talking about. I encouraged him to post the explanaiton somewhere for the benefit of the project. -Will Beback 08:30, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the info. I'm back and forth on whether I think the whole US Attorney's category should be removed or if I want to go through and create actual pages for each office. But either way, I appreciate the help. JCO312 16:45, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

I saw the car dealership article. Written by the same guy whose adding all sorts of uncited info on the Anaheim Hills page. Unbelievable. JCO312 01:20, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
I saw the edit that got him blocked, as I was half following the whole situation after I contributed to the RfA against CoolCaesar. I'm trying to be as level headed and nice to him as possible, since he seems to take everything so personally (any reversion of his work is because of anger against him apparently). I was a little annoyed that the page got full protection, since he was the last person to edit it, and there are now some unsourced and otherwise inappropriate paragraphs, but what can you do? JCO312 02:31, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Weights and Measures

Hi BlankVerse. Can you tell me where I could find a page that would list Misplaced Pages guidelines on the use of weights and measures (if there is one). For example, would you say "Escondido is 30 miles from San Diego" or it's "50 km from San Diego" or "Escondido is 30 miles (50 km)" etc. I'm not looking for a specific answer to that particular situation, but for a policy page where I can get answers related to weight and measures usage in general. In fact, is there a portal in general leading to Misplaced Pages pages that lists pages to other Wiki conventions (for example, it would also link to the city naming convention page). I have browsed through the Misplaced Pages help pages, but with less than satisfactory results. Thanks, Soltras 03:43, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the help (for this and also questions in the past). I appreciate it! Soltras 04:16, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the link. I've started browsing the manual of style and it has a lot of great information. Soltras 18:43, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

A response

I added a response to the Misplaced Pages:Communities strawpoll page to your comment. I would appreciate any further comments you have to be stated. Ericsaindon2 08:23, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Can you think of anything I can do to frame the poll better, even though it has already begun? I want this one to count to end this waste-of-time arguement, but I do not want to just disregard the poll. Do you have any suggestions on how to reframe this thing quickly, and maybe extend the deadline by a few days or something? I do not know, but I just am tired of this arguement, and I bet you know how I feel. Ericsaindon2 08:35, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Ericsaindon2=

You provided some good advice. Yes, you do live close to me, and that is probably why we are both so active in Southern California articles. I used to live in Rolling Hills Estates, but now I live in Anaheim Hills, so I did move away from you a bit. I took your advice with an open mind. First of all, I admit all my sockpuppets. All of my sockpuppets have "Ericsaindon or Eric saindon" in them. As far as the others you claim, and others claim I have. I still stand by the fact that OC31113 is a good friend, but you can clearly see that we are different upon further analysis. ES92808 is my brother, and although I originally created the account (not as a sockpuppet, but for him), I do not use the account in the abusive nature you stated. I still have no connection with Mr.Executive. I do not know how that user got all mixed up in all of this mess. As far as the shouting, I will not do that anymore. I will try to work on other articles not relating to places in SOCal, but I admit that other topics are a lot harder to do (cities and communities always have a lot of info).

As far as the Straw Poll. Do you think we can just terminate it right now? I mean, it is not like there is so much time invested in it at this point. Maybe, we can close it for 2 days, and reopen it, with fresh text and votes, or maybe we can just further discuss it, but I agree, this strawpoll did not go the way I wanted it to. But, you have to admit, it was getting tiresome at every community going through the same rhetoric. I just think that if we shut it down for 2 days, and reconstruct it keeping all the arguements and comments in mind (from the community pages themselves and what people have stated thus far) and try to recreate it, and extend the deadline. Do you think it would work? I mean, we can treat the current strawpoll as the "pre discussion". What do you think? Ericsaindon2 19:28, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Is it time that the community just come together, and create a list of goals for ALL places in the Unites States (Cities, communities, census designated places, unincorporated areas..etc.). I see that San Francisco and Boston are joining in on the naimg debate. I mean, would it be possible to create one LARGE straw poll that encompasses all major place namespaces in Misplaced Pages. It is clear that we need to update the consensus on place conventions, and I think one large poll would do this. Plus, it would give me an excuse to cancel the Communities strawpoll, since so many people think it was poorly constructed. But, how do we have a discussion on a larger scale like this? I know that there is not going to be a consensus of all voters agreeing, but I would like to update all the naming conventions relating to places in the US to meet a newer standard. Do we start a large discussion page that is aimed for the naming of all places in the United States on the Misplaced Pages: namespace, or what? Should I begin that large discussion? At what point would a straw poll be necessary? I was also thinking of something else. How about I sort of create a straw poll that is inactive on the Misplaced Pages namespace. Then, we have a discussion with all people interested on how to better improve it, other naming options, etc. before it starts. It would be considered "inactive" until a thorough discussion is conducted, and people agree with the way it is worded, and that all the options are listed, at which point it would be open for voting. How does that sound or work? Ericsaindon2 06:55, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Snarky Editing

You removed a related, non-commercial link that I had posted (http://www.dailynewshaikus.com) from the haiku page with the comment "they are jokes sliced and diced into the 5-7-5 format, so they are neither poetry or senryu. The nternet is filled with news haiku, celebrity haiku, film review haiku, so your site i not special".

Is your job to judge external work or to prevent bad facts, indecent content and vandalism? You believe that the site that I linked does not belong because it's content is more humorous than traditionally "poetic" in your view? Not "special"?

Such editorialism and censorship would be unjust in any case, but is especially ludicrous in light of the fact that the link was posted in a section SPECIFICALY SLOTTED FOR "PSEUDO-HAIKUS"!

As the site was neither offensive or misleading, I am hard-pressed to discern why you would remove it, let alone leave others, let alone make the (inaccurate) observation that the Internet is "filled" with similar sites. )A quick search shows a few defunct one-off stabs at the topic, but no fully-functioing sites devoted thereto). Is Misplaced Pages now a repository only for unique web pages -- because at 400,000,000 URLs and counting, I don't believe such a thing exists anymore.

Please state what exactly you are trying to protect readers from, what a site has to do to be "special" in your eyes, or leave the page linked. I appreciate what you guys do by-and-large (fact checking, arson cleanup, etc.) but feel that in removing content because it does not impress you, you are overstepping your bounds and going against the very mission of Wiki. — Preceding unsigned comment added by KDog1749 (talkcontribs)

RE: Pseudo-haiku and senryu external links

BlankVerse:

Thank you very much for taking the time for a thorough and thoughtful response.

I find it odd that you would resist pointing people to a web location based upon the fact that it is not yet readily available elsewhere (why does one need Wiki if one can simply Google?), but if that is part of your standard I must accept it. News Haiku is only 2 weeks old, and thus is not yet cataloged and findable on many major search engines -- something that I hope to improve/rectify over time. One way I had hoped to work on this was by making the link available on Wiki (perhaps I put the cart before the horse).

I appreciate your feedback (most notably the comment on "haiku " being singular and plural -- I am registering and linking the singular name and will change the site's name).

I do belive that you are giving short shrift to the content of my page -- especially if you would favor "Madeleine Begun Kane Daily News" to mine. Despite the title of her site, she posts only one haiku per day...and has posted only 6 haiku in toto since September 2005. In contrast, mine has featured 9-15 haiku per day (including graphic enhancement and links to the actual news) and is actually updated "daily". With time, robot crawls, and repeated use/population my web page will clearly climb the ranks of search enginge popularity and findability...if that is as important for your criteria as content, then I hope you will reconsider the link (both its content and "importance") in the near future.

I may not agree with your personal judgment or Wiki ruling, but I do appreciate the time and response. KDog1749 18:12, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Jan Burke

I was actually surprised when I didn't see an entry for her, and hence immediately set about starting it. Thanks for appreciating it:-) I am currently searching for a link to cite the Bill Clinton reference. It is currently only available in the author's bio and nowere else.

I have also e-mailed the author (just now) if she has any third party references. I didn't know she wrote for the Long Beach Press-Telegram since I didn't find that in the bio. Why don't you add that in her entry?--PremKudva 04:24, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Sock or no sock?

Because you probably know a lot more than I do (I have not been paying much attention to the specifics recently), I need your advice: After examining this specific user's contributions and this edit, could you please give me a simple answer to the question, "Sock or no sock?" and I will deal with it appropriately. Thanks. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 04:18, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
