Mahendra Mohan Gupta (born 1940) is the Chairman and Managing Director of Jagran Group, one of India’s leading media house and owner of largest read Newspaper of the country, Dainik Jagran. He is also Member of the Board of Press Trust of India and Indian Newspaper Society.

Background

Mahendra Mohan is the son of the founder of Dainik Jagran newspaper, freedom fighter, and writer Late Puranchandra Gupta. As a freethinker intellectual, Mr. Gupta started his career under guidance of his father in 1954. During his career Mahendra Mohan Gupta has also held various important positions outside the Jagran Group in addition to being Member of Parliament. Under his leadership, as the group moves forward, with the underlying objective is to expand presence across a range of media platforms, evolve the traditional media business, develop newer media businesses, and leverage synergies for overall growth, his vision for the group is also to ensure that group is present across every consumer media touch-point and deliver value to every life we touch.

He is also blessed with a son and a daughter. His son Shailesh Gupta is Whole-Time Director of Jagran Prakashan Limited. With more than 24 years of experience in the print media industry, Shailesh Gupta was the Chairman and also Director of Council of Audit Bureau of Circulations, Board member of The Indian Newspaper Society and heads advertisement and marketing department of Jagran Prakashan Limited along being director in Midday Infomedia Limited, MMI Online Limited, Rave Real Estate Private Limited, etc.

Media Career

Mahendra Mohan Gupta joined Dainik Jagran in 1954, to look after editorial, circulation and financial aspects, and he is also credited with raising public issue of Jagran Prakashan Limited. He was the Chairman of United News of India , President of Indian Newspaper Society, President of the Indian languages Newspaper Association, Council Member of Audit Bureau of Circulations, Mumbai and has held several other key responsible positions. For excellence in Hindi Journalism, he was honoured with the various awards and recognitions. With over 50 years of experience, MMG, as he is popularly known, is one of the leading media thinkers of our times. Under his able stewardship, Jagran Prakashan Limited went public. Also, under his leadership, the group expanded from one newspaper Dainik Jagran to multiple media products making it one of the largest media conglomerates in the country today. India Today and Indian Express have ranked him among the 50 most powerful people of India. In recent years, group has many acquisition to its credit like Mid Day acquision, Nai Dunia acquisition and Radio City acquisition.

Mahendra Mohan remained Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha during 2006-12. He was member of Standing Committee on Finance, Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Commerce & Industry along with being member of various other committees, like, Railway Convention Committee, Committee on Public Undertakings,Consultative Committee of Power and Committee of Subordinate Legislation etc.
