- Hot Rod is not to be confused with Hot Shot, a very similar character from Transformers Armada, Energon and Cybertron.
Hot Rod (Hot Rodimus in Japan) is a character from The Transformers. He is sometimes called Rodimus or Rodimus Major. First introduced in Transformers: The Movie, where he is voiced by Judd Nelson. He transforms into a red sports car, with flames painted on the hood and doors.
Hasbro Tech Spec: Hot Rod is an all-American-boy Autobot. He is a typical adolescent who dreams of being heroic or important. He tends to follow rules too closely. Although he means well, Hot Rod's impulsive actions often get him into trouble. He can be hotheaded, but he's always a well-meaning, admirable lad and a brave and honorable fighter. He carries two photon lasers that temporarily electromagnetize an enemy robot's microcircuits. Speed: 120 mph. Range: 4 miles. Hot Rod's impulsive actions often get him into trouble.
Movie/Animated Series
Hot Rod has a youthful attitude, and serves as an older brother figure to Daniel Witwicky, son of Autobot ally Spike Witwicky. He has a sort of mentor-student relationship with the veteran Autobot, Kup. Later in life he temporarily bears the Autobot Matrix of Leadership and becomes Rodimus Prime (Rodimus Convoy in Japan), and leader of the Autobots.
Hot Rod first appeared in the American animated series during the events of Transformers: The Movie, where he was one of the many Autobots stationed at Autobot City. He fought in the Autobot city battle and witnessed (some may say contributed to) the death of Optimus Prime due to his attempted intervention in the battle between the Autobot leader and Megatron. He fled the city with Kup and the Dinobots when Galvatron, a recreated Megatron, attacked the city after being reformatted by Unicron. After meeting up with the other Autobots after a series of adventures on planets Quintessa and Junk, Hot Rod returned to the other Autobots and rushed to Cybertron to save it from being eaten by Unicron.
After facing Galvatron inside Unicron's body, Hot Rod was able to get his hands on the Autobot Matrix of Leadership, which reformatted him into Rodimus Prime. He then threw Galvatron into deep space and destroyed Unicron, before truly assuming his role as the prophecized new leader of the Autobots.
After the movie, Hot Rod only appeared three more times: once when he gave the Matrix to a Quintesson controlled Optimus Prime, when he lost the Matrix to the Decepticon, Scourge and finally when Optimus Prime returned and Rodimus was able to return to being Hot Rod for good.
In the 3 part finale to the US Transformers animated series, The Rebirth, Hot Rod became a Targetmaster.
Marvel Comics
Hot Rod appeared in the Headmasters limited series as one of the Autobot crew lead by Fortress Maximus. Her became a Targetmaster in the fourth issue of the series.
Dreamwave Comics
Hot Rod lead a cell of Autobots in resistance to the leadership of Shockwave on Cybertron until Shockwave was overthrown by Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus.
Generation 2
Although no toy was released for Hot Rod in Generation 2, he did appear in the Marvel Generation 2 comics.
Transformers: Universe
In the Transformers: Universe storyline, Rodimus (as he is now called) gets upgraded into a Maximal (looking like his Autobot form, but slightly smaller and more energy efficient). He serves as a member of the Wreckers, third in command after Primal Prime and Apelinq. He serves as the Matrix Avatar for the group.
Transformers: Classics
In the 2006/2007 line which features G1 characters in updated forms, Hot Rod (now called Rodimus due to copyright reasons) is in the first wave of Autobots along with Optimus Prime and Bumblebee.
Motto: "Action is my middle name."
Young and bold, RODIMUS races headlong into danger, throwing caution - and his orders - to the wind. He dreams of heroic deeds and hopes one day to gain the recognition his actions deserve. Despite his inexperience, he is a talented fighter. In battle, he can often be seen racing at speeds up to 180 miles per hour, dodging explosions and laser blasts in an attempt to close on his objective.
