Like Excel Saga, the Japanese anime serial Puni Puni Poemi (Japanese:ぷにぷに☆ぽえみぃ) is a wacky satirical parody. The staff of both series are almost identical, among them the director Shinichi Watanabe. Since Puni Puni Poemi is an OVA spinoff of Excel Saga, some characters also return, most notoriously Nabeshin, Watanabe's alter ego. The last episode of Excel Saga had Nabeshin marrying Kumi-Kumi; Poemi Watanabe, the main character of Puni Puni Poemi, is their daughter.

Puni Puni Poemi 's ridicule focuses on OVA clichés, mostly magical girl series, but also (in surprisingly graphical way) hentai, making it highly unsuitable for children. Also being pardoized a combat anime (such as Dragonball Z), Mecha (Mainly super robot, but also Gundam, as evidence in a sex toy that resembles a warship from that series), and fanservice.

There are 2 episodes, each having a length of about 26 minutes.

The english translation is called Puni Puni Poemy and is available on DVD from ADV Films.

Characters

  • Poemi Watanabe: A hyperactive 10-year-old girl - even more hyperactive than Excel Excel. She wants to be a voice actress (and keeps calling herself Kobayashi - the name of her seiyuu (voice actress), Yumiko Kobayashi).
  • Puni Puni Poemi: Poemi finds a fish, stabs it with a kitchen knife and it becomes a magic item which transforms Poemi into the typical magical girl. Obvious paradizing Sailor Moon's transformation
  • Futaba Aasu: Poemi's classmate and best friend, who is in love with her. Many fans comment her appearance and fawning behavior towards Poemi is an obvious parody of Tomoyo Daidouji from Cardcaptor Sakura, who was also in love with her best friend, a magical girl.
  • Kumi-kumi-san: The girl from the mountains in Excel Saga and she's Poemi's mother.
  • Director (Nabeshin): He's happily married to Kumi-kumi-san and is Poemi's father. Poemi often called him director because he is the director's self insert. (Refer to Excel Saga)
  • The Aasu (Earth) family: The girls' names are all related to numbers:
    • Nanase (from nana=7) is the oldest
    • Mutsumi (muttsu=6),
    • Itsue (itsu=5), A dominatrix
    • Shii (shi=4),
    • Mitsuki (mittsu=3),
    • Futaba (futa=2) and finally
    • Hitomi (hito=1).

Shii looks like Hyatt, just that she has enormous breasts and loves to let them rest on top of Poemi's head. Also, she resembles Misato from Evangelion, since both characters are often described as busty in anime.

All of them have somewhat impressive but functionally useless magical powers. (Because all we have are defensive power)

  • Kei-kun: The boy Poemi likes, although the feeling isn't mutual.
