Wolferton Splash is the pilot episode of the biographical drama television series The Crown. It premiered on November 4, 2016, when it was released along with the rest of the first season on the streaming service Netflix.
Plot
In November 1947, Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark gives up his royal titles and all foreign relations in order to be allowed to marry Princess Elizabeth, heiress presumptive of King George VI. Elizabeth shares a close relationship with her father, who is suffering from a ghastly cough and struggles from carrying the heavy weight of being. Elizabeth and Philip have two children together, Charles and Anne, and live in Malta, where Philip serves as Lieutenant-Commander of the Royal Navy. In 1951, they return to London when George has to undergo lung surgery; soon after, he learns that he has months to live due to a malignant tumor in his remaining lung. In the knowledge he has very little time left with his family and that Elizabeth will soon be Queen, George decides to spare his wife and daughters the knowledge of his illness. During the family's annual Christmas holiday at Sandringham House, George counsels Philip on how best to assist his wife in the challenge ahead.
In the meantime, George's youngest daughter Margaret confides in her sister with the mutual attraction between herself and her father's equerry, Peter Townsend, despite the fact that he is married and has two children with his wife, with whom he has a troubled marriage. Meanwhile, Winston Churchill is re-elected after six years out of government, a move of which George approves.
