Essjaybot II on WP:MCQ

Misplaced Pages:Media copyright questions could use auto-archiving. —Simetrical (talk • contribs) 03:43, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Bring it up on the talk page, and if the consensus is that it's a desired service, I'll set it up. Ping me whne there is a decision on doing it, and a time schedule, in whole days. Essjay (Talk) 02:48, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

EssjayBot II flag

You added EssjayBot II to the list of flagged bots, but it doesn't have a flag. Maybe you forgot to flag it? —Simetrical (talk • contribs) 18:26, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

No, it's an archive bot, so I didn't want it flagged; users should be able to see what it's doing. I added it to the section for maintenence bots without realizing that it was a sub-queue of flagged bots. It should be moved down. Essjay (Talk) 01:34, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
I can understand that attitude for antivandal bots, but shouldn't archive bots be unobtrusive? —Simetrical (talk • contribs) 03:45, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
Bot flags are to keep bots from flooding recent changes, not to hide them totally. This bot doesn't do enough to ever flood recent changes, so a flag is unnecessary; the rule is to only add restricted permissions (and bot is one of them) to accounts that need them. The archive bot doesn't. Essjay (Talk) 02:48, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Remove an edit from userpage history

Hi Essjay, I noticed you had oversight rights, and I was hoping you could remove an edit from my user page's history. The diff link is , the vandal was just having fun (I know them in real life, it was all meant to be in good faith according to them and I won't be pursuing the case - User:Sp0kk was the vandal) but in the process they revealed a lot of personal information about me, most of which could be googled but I'd rather not have sitting around in my user page's edit history. I'd appreciate if you could delete the entry. Thanks, Draicone 11:49, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

If it hasn't already been done, I'll get it. Essjay (Talk) 02:48, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Editcounter bug

So... who do I need to bug/bribe if I've found a bug in your editcounter? :( Titoxd 22:21, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

The "Report Problems" link on Essjay's edit counter directs a user to Essjay's email. Also, I think Essjay accepts bribes through PayPal :-) Hope that helps. -- Psy guy 23:12, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Not a bug, merely an inconvenience, but I've noticed that the Total edits link at the top of the page tries to go to http://en.wikipedia.org/Special:Contributions/nae - the apostrophe must be throwing something off. Thanks for the new version, though! -- nae'blis 18:25, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

I'll have a look at it. Essjay (Talk) 02:48, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Tools

You have created some very useful tools! To create tools on http://www.tools.wikimedia.de, do you need to download some sort of software, or do you write a code that is placed on the website itself? --Gray Porpoise 18:27, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

You have to have an account on the toolserver, which are given out on an as-needed basis by the German Wikimedia chapter. See m:Toolserver. Essjay (Talk) 02:48, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Monobook.js

You say that it is easy to remove the admin functions in your Monobook.js. Could you tell me how to do this? I like to keep my Monobook as small as possible, heh. Kalani 18:37, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

User:Essjay/user/monobook.js. Essjay (Talk) 02:48, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
Thank you very much. And welcome back, from your, er...break. =) Kalani 02:55, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
You're welcome; not so much a break as a need to be in the real world: This is the time of year that meetings and the like are taking place for the beginning of the school year, and I have a few extra duties this year than I did last year. I'm hoping to still be able to drop in regularly, but I'll definately be sparce for a while. Essjay (Talk) 03:08, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
I spoke too soon; I have replaced my entire Monobook.js with the one you provided, and have blanked my Monobook.css, but still the Monobook.js doesn't display any of the features. What could be wrong? Kalani 03:12, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
What browser are you using, and did you remember to do a "hard refresh" to clear your browser cache? (You can find instructions on doing this at the top of your monobook.js page; it usually involves ctrl + R or something similar) Essjay (Talk) 03:19, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
I'm using Firefox, and yes, I did do a "hard refresh". Kalani 03:35, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
Hmmm, I'm not sure; I'll have to play with it a bit. Essjay (Talk) 03:42, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
You need to add some code to the .css to get the dropdowns to work, but it sounds like you can't get anything at all? I'll take a look. One thing to check, make sure you have javascript enabled in firefox, if you don't this would cause problems. Prodego 14:05, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
The file was just missing a closing parenthesis, I have fixed both Essjay's master file and Kalathalan's, as well as adding the necessary code to Kalathalan's css to get the dropdowns to work. Prodego 14:14, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Enhanced edit counter?

I find the edit counter very useful. Would it be possible to produce one operating on similar principles that graphs edits by time of day, or time and day of week?--Runcorn 22:30, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Well, it's on the toolserver, so it would have the same problems Interiot's edit counter has: German privacy laws. Titoxd 23:18, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Indeed. Mine isn't intended to be as full-featured as Interiot's, either; it's just a quick little tool to keep things running while the database is broken, or if there are problems after it is fixed. Essjay (Talk) 02:48, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Block review

Essjay, can you please review your block of User:JAnD. The block reason, and talk messae, is that this was an unapproved bot. I approved a trial run of this bot on WP:RFBOT on August 2. It appeared to be a useful bot. Although they do not follow the scrict naming convention for bots, they did "clearly demonstrate that it is a bot" by marking as robot, as well as to what it did. The bot operator has mentioned on WP:RFBOT if they should be renamed to a *bot name as well. Thank you, — xaosflux 23:56, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

You seem to be away from the project. I've gone ahead an unblocked this account so that it can continue it's trial run per WP:RFBOT. They will be requesting a username change as well. I will post this on the bot page, if anyone else objects I will reblock right away. When you return, if you want to reblock this account, I waive any wheeling complaints. Thank you, — xaosflux 00:37, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

I checked and couldn't find anything on the bot, and beyond anything, it was a policy violation on the name and should never have been approved without a namechange. However, if you're on top of it, I'm fine with whatever you decide. Essjay (Talk) 02:48, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, I'll keep the user-name naming convention for bots in mind next time, welcome back btw! — xaosflux 01:28, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Archiving Misplaced Pages:Changing username

Your bot has archived some still-active change requests! 203.94.144.226 00:52, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

  • I reverted the un-acted upon requests. Hopefully a beaurecrat (sp?) will take up the slack tonight. I don't want to ask to have Essjaybot II blocked; if it's only WP:CHU I can manually watch it for a day or two until someone gets the backlog. Thatcher131 (talk) 01:01, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

That's the problem with expecting that someone will do the work; when the bureaucrat who does 95% of all namechanges has to spend some time in the real world, things go off schedule. If the other bureaucrats are picking up the slack now, it should be no problem. Essjay (Talk) 02:48, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Archiving WP:3RR

Can you set your bot to archive entries at Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard/3RR which have gone two days without any changes? In my experience, if no action has been taken within that time period, it's either been settled or has migrated to a different noticeboard. Tijuana Brass 01:59, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

No problem, will do as soon as I can. Essjay (Talk) 02:48, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Board candidate forum

Hi Essjay! Any update on the possible board candidate forum we were discussing before Wikimania? Haukur 14:56, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

I've been away for a week, so I'm not sure. I'll find out as soon as I can. Essjay (Talk) 02:48, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

board stuff

I would really like that discussion pages with candidates be on meta, rather than subquestions on their talk pages in local projects. Could you change this and open a sub page for each candidate on meta, where people can ask them questions and those interested can quickly go over answers provided rather than to have to fish them ?

Also, would it not make sense to suggest that candidates provide a bio ?

Thanks

Anthere

I've been away for a week; I'll forward this on to the other two officials. Essjay (Talk) 02:48, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Locked myself out of my bot account

I've just locked myself out of my bot account, User:The Anomebot, by changing its password to something fiendishly difficult to remember -- and then promptly forgetting it. I've now indefblocked it. I'll create a new account, and re-apply for bot permissions for that account. -- The Anome 01:51, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

No problem. :) Essjay (Talk) 02:48, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Eddie Johnson (basketball)

Edward "Fast Eddie" Johnson Jr., a former NBA basketball player was arrested for pedophilia. Eddie Johnson (basketball) was NOT arrested for pedophilia. Unfortunately, the accusation has made it's way to the wrong page. The current page is correct but there are history's that have the false accusation. Per Living Bio's I have seen entries with libelous claims get permanently deleted. I am not sure if this is policy or not but it may deserve a look. I am not sure if regular admins can do this or if it's a bureaucrats job. I'd do it myself if I had the tools. --Tbeatty 03:51, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

What you want are people with oversight permission. Essjay is one but seems to be on a break. You can use Special:Listusers to find another; there are 25 admins with oversight permission altogether. Thatcher131 (talk) 05:49, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Request for EssjayBot

Essjay, I'm trying to set up automated deletion of sections older than 14 days from the Village Pump archives. Unfortunately, Werdnabot doesn't do the deletion like Crypticbot used to, but I think I've got a system set up with Misplaced Pages:Village pump (assistance)/Archive that should work. Could you set up EssjayBot to periodically wipe Misplaced Pages:Village pump/Archival dump like it would a sandbox? I think that's as close to automated deletion as we can get without Crypticbot running. Of course, let me know if you've got a better idea. If this works, I'll set up the other five archives of WP:VP to do things the same way. Thanks and cheers!--Kchase T 00:18, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Hmm...Drop the idea on VP and if they go for it, let me know and I'll set it up. Essjay (Talk) 02:48, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Would CheckUser help in cases like this?

Someone asked me on my user talk to help find out the identity of the person creating this series of attack pages, all on the same person: Matt Jobb, M.Jobb, M.Jobby, M.a.t.t.j.o.b.b, Matt.J, Matthew Jobb, M Jobby, and Matt Jobbey. Would a CheckUser help in this case? If it wouldn't, is there be any other way to find out? Thanks in advance.

(The username that created all these pages has been indef-blocked.) Kimchi.sg 00:35, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Since the creator is already blocked, you are asking (or rather, the mother of the person named above is asking) to reveal the IP of the person involved so she can file a complaint with their ISP and possibly discover his real identity. The checkusers could disclose the IP, but in my experience they won't, in these kinds of simple vandalism, where the on-wiki aspect is easily dealt with. In this case I would direct her to the wikimedia foundation. The stewards and Danny have checkuser (obviously), and they will have the means to verify that the complaintant is really the named person's mother and will be in a better position to decide whether or not to disclose the IP. Thatcher131 (talk) 01:27, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
Done. I directed her to board at wikimedia dot org. Kimchi.sg 13:39, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

I'll take you up on your offer

A couple weeks ago, you offered to use Essjaybot to archive my talk pages. If it wouldn't be too much of a bother, I'd like to take you up on that offer, provided it can maintain the same archiving style I recently switched to. Raul654 14:41, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

EssjayBot

I'm not sure if you intentionally or accidentally erased my previous comment , but as I said Sandbot is working again, so could you please reset the sandbox header to the Sandbot link and stop EssjayBot from resetting the sandboxes? Thanks. User:Timrem/Sig 18:08, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Carol Yager

Hello,

Thank you for accepting the article 'Carol Yager' for mediation. I have a question though. I've just noticed that on the 'Mediation' page, there is a section for submitting 'Additional issues to be mediated'. I would like to know if it's too late to add aditional issues to this section, after the article has been accepted for mediation? Thank you for any help. Terry Yager 22:56, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

EssJay Bot or something like it...

I am trying to set up an Archive for Selected Articles on a portal. Is there a way to automate this with a bot so that any past Selected Articles are added to the page without the need to edit it? --chris_huh 12:02, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Mediation on Michael Ignatieff

I thought you might like to take a look at some work I'm doing with mediation on Talk:Michael Ignatieff in case this is something that might be employed elsewhere. It's an attempt at a structured system to stop the dispute going round in circles or rambling on endlessly. The first stage is in progress with verification. Any disputed statements in the article have been copied onto the talk page and are being analysed individually. It is working well so far. (I had to shelve a first attempt, now in a Storage sub page, as it got too messy, so I devised a structure to contain this.)

I don't think there's any OR, so the next stage I envisage is to examine for NPOV, which will be a bit harder, but I shall try to get specific suggestions which again can be put under separate headings and debated in the same way. Essentially my role is to provide a firm structure, maintain good behaviour, point to policy and provide contexts with clear parameters, as well as occasional pointers.

Please let any members of the Mediation Committee know who might be interested in following this, or if anybody wants to work with me on this idea, they can get in touch.

And thanks for the sysopping not so long ago! Tyrenius 02:54, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

PS There was some rather nasty stuff taking place around this article before I arrived in terms of personal attacks. This has now calmed down. Tyrenius 02:56, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Delete old username?

Hi - I hope I'm through to the right person - I just noticed that you'd helped User:GMc change his user name, and wondered if you can help me.

I did this myself a few months ago, but just did it manually, by creating a new account User:CPMcE, and manually re-entering my watchlist (ouch!). Silly me, I should have realised that there'd be an easier way...

Anyway, I just made my previous account User:Camillus McElhinney, redirect to User:CPMcE - (just for more privacy, as I'd fallen victim to some wikitrolling) can you delete the old account for me? Camillus (talk) 23:17, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Due to GFDL restrictions, usernames can never be deleted. However, you can rename your old username to something else and leave it untouched. To request this, please post a request at Misplaced Pages:Changing username. Cheers, Tangotango 02:52, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Quick question

I'm sorry to bother you, but I was wondering if Metron's edit to Original sin was a violation of the five pillars of Misplaced Pages, specifically neutrality. The article originally used words like, "Some may argue", and then Metron4 deleted that so that it just read the opinion as fact. Reference our discussion. -Ruff 00:31, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:Requests for mediation/Shock and awe

SJ - Sorry to trouble, but is the Mediation Committee going to get to this soon? The page in dispute is currently protected and there's nothing going on in Talk, so ... um ... we're ready... Thanks, KWH 09:04, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Please be aware of the two suspected sock puppets involved in this mediation, Starcare and Publicola. This article should have never been locked, especially at the request of a sock puppet.--Scribner 04:31, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Semi-Protection

Hi. Can you semi- protect my user and user talk pages? Thanks. User:Invisible Robot Fish/sig 16:20, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Hey mate...

Hi Essjay, haven't seen you on IRC for a wee while hope all is well! I was wondering how difficult it might be to add a first edit date field to your edit counter (similar to Interiot's tool2)? Would make it ideal for use in RfAs... doable? Thanks so much in advance and hopefully "see" you on IRC soon :) - GIen 16:32, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

VCN Logo

Hi Essjay, what's the licensing on http://countervandalism.org/skins/common/images/cvu.png? I would like to make a VCN userbox. I'm trading in my WP:CVU one because I'm starting to agree with The Cunctator's opinion that "paramilitary fantasies have no place on Misplaced Pages". Cheers,  Netsnipe    18:22, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Don't worry. I just found Image:New CVU Logo.png. --  Netsnipe    18:27, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
This user IRCs on the Vandalism Control Network.

I hope you like it. If you still have the original SVG of the VCN logo, it'd be greatly appreciated since the PNG is slightly blurry after the scaling (hence the background colour to soften the edges). Cheers,  Netsnipe    19:30, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

I suspect you don't (since the description page says it's made in GIMP), so I made Image:VCN logo.svg and replaced it within the template. Cheers! Misza13 19:43, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Essjaybot + interproject cooperation

Hi. I'm wondering if it is technically possible to a) have your bot installed here perform tasks on other wikis b) for you to install your bot on an other wiki

In particular I would like to harvest the archiving capabilities of Essjaybot on the Hungarian CommonsTicker. I shall not waste your time explaining how cool it would be if this worked, so if you can please do your magick, if you can't please point me towards the possibilities and methods of cloning and running your bot (provided you give permission) on the Hungarian wiki. Though your bot should prove most useful I would use it or ask you to use it only on that one linked page.

Thanks for your answer. Dami --Dami 01:51, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Lost mediation

Hey Essjay, The Lost episodes mediation has been at a halt for a few weeks. We've been waiting for our mediator, ^demon, to give us some insight on how to continue. However, ^demon does not seem to be active. How should we proceed? Thanks. -- Wikipedical 23:32, 21 August 2006 (UTC) The situation is still at a standstill, do you have any suggestions on how to proceed? Thanks. -- Wikipedical 23:02, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Regarding a blocked user

I was looking at the similarities between the blocked users Cute 1 4 u and her "sock puppets". There are similarities between Cute 1 4 u and Lindsay1980. The numbers in the names, the style of writing, the words she uses. But she seems to have no connection with User:Raven Symone, more than the fact that she likes Raven. Check closer at the way she wrote, conversed, and you will see a difference. --66.218.13.7 05:58, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Nevermind. I saw what she said on her talk page. She was indeed User:Raven Symone --66.218.13.7 06:04, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Image talk:Image-Adolf Hitler Bigger.jpg

Could you please take a look at Image talk:Image-Adolf Hitler Bigger.jpg as you were the last admin on commons that deleted the same picture. Somewhere in either the en or commons version of the deleted picture is the original source information. It looks very much like this needs deleting again, but it would be good to make a permanent record of that somewhere, as this issue will come up again ... and again ... and again. Agathoclea 09:06, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Hello,

I haven't heard back from you yet, so I went ahead and inserted some additional topics for mediation on the page. I hope this hasn't violated any of Misplaced Pages's rules.

Your user page

I know you're quite busy with WP stuff, but I wanted to drop a quick note to complement you on the beautiful userpage. I especially love the photos. I'm a semi-pro photographer, and always appreciate tasteful use of images...yours is probably the nicest looking user page I've come across yet. Oh, and also, thanks for making the edit counter available...it's nice to have access to it. Thanks! Akradecki 03:19, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Countervandalism.org

Various long term abuse pages are up for deletion at WP:MFD and it doesn't look good for some of them. Would you mind if they were transwikied to countervandalism.org? I've also got a few vandal pages of my own I want to move over there - could you create an account for me so I can do that? I can't seem to find the create an account link, or the new users log for that matter. Drop me an email with the password. Thanks. MER-C 04:37, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Are you trying to special:import them? Most likely just the top revision. Either way you must give at least the main 5 contributors credit and mention others as having worked on if, if that site is GFDL. Then again, it may not be GFDL.Voice-of-All 03:26, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
I am the sole editor of two of the vandal pages. For the other one, I am one of two editors. As for licensing, we'll see whether Essjay allows the transwiki of the ones that are up for deletion. MER-C 09:34, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

By the way, a great deal of the long term abuse pages have been deleted. MER-C 08:41, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Removing b'crat and checkuser tags from monomonobook

I've been using your monobook for sometime now but I've found that the b'crat and checkuser menus can get in the way sometimes (I'd like to keep the sysop menu as the access to someone's blocklog quickly can be useful). You say at the top of your script that it's easy to do so, and that the best way of finding out is to contact you - so here I am. I'd appreciate any help you can provide. Essjaybot & Sandbox

How does Essjaybot decide when to clear the sandbox? It is doing it on average once every 20 minutes, sometimes every 5 minutes. —Centrxtalk • 05:03, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Most of Essjaybot's cleanings of the sandbox are manual resets, meaning someone clicked the link in the sandbox header to reset the sandbox. From what I've seen, Essjaybot automatically cleans the Sandbox at noon and midnight (00:00 and 12:00 UTC). Timrem 14:55, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure if I am understanding correctly what happened or what should have happened, but I think that my request was archived before it could be completed and that it may have been overlooked. I did put a request in to the bureaucrat (Taxman) who I thought was taking care of this, but I'm not sure of what to do here. Do I need to restore this from the archive, and if so, what is the protocol? Should I just sit tight? Any direction you can provide would be appreciated. Regards --Brian G (Talk) 01:37, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Standard archiving doesn't always work without special modification when dealing with pages that get large numbers of requests that need to be cleared out, especially quickly, since the type of response matters. This may be a good task for VoABot, like WP:RFPP. It can scan for Images right after indents (response icons) and Sysop (for CHU, it would be BCrat) responses. That way it can clear requests out more quickly and accurately, especially if response icons are used.Voice-of-All 02:55, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, these are starting to flood in faster and faster it seems, or I just didn't reallize how many you were doing, Essjay. Can we try something else to only archive those with ":done" in the response or something? To me that's easier than using an icon and would allow quicker archiving for the completed cases. - Taxman 17:47, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
Essjay's been out for a long time. You should try to e-mail him. I'd hate to block the Essjaybot II account since it also archives ANI. One temporary workaround would be to have people sign with three tildes, not 4, as the bot only archives sections with valid standard time stamps. Hope this helps. If a bureaucrat wants me to write such a thing, I can add it to VoABot. It can check for :done and a bureaucrat's name/talk page and last comment date. Though I'd have to know how you'd want it to be done (just clear out or archive, archive names, ect...).Voice-of-All 00:08, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

EssjayBot III

OK, I've move all my archive pages to get rid of the extra "0" before the numbers. I hope the bot can start archiving it now. Thanks.Voice-of-All 02:49, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

WP:COPPA and personal information

Hi Essjay,

Within the past few days, a recent proposed policy has been created to help protect youngsters on Misplaced Pages. The policy would basically prohibit children 13 and under from giving out personal information on this site, and give users the authority to remove such material. However, most users would only be able to edit the page, but not remove potential matierial from the history, something, as you know, which requires Oversight.

The proposed policy is brand-new, and as such hasn't yet attracted a lot of attention. Probably most editors don't even know it exists as of yet. No one with Oversight powers has yet weighed in on the issue, so I figured I'd drop a friendly note on the talk page of someone with oversight, and, after looking over the list, I figured you're probably one of the more approachable ones.

The talk page is located at Wikipedia_talk:Protecting_children's_privacy; as this proposed policy will, I imagine, directly impact the Oversight team, I figured input from someone on the team might be appropriate.

Happy editing! :) Firsfron of Ronchester 03:58, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Ross Jeffries mediation

Hi, you might have seen my message recently on the mailing list. Anyways, after some advice from Wisden, I have decided to proceed with the mediation even though one of the parties appears to be on a long wikibreak. (That said, I intend to suggest starting with issues that that user does not seem to be involved in, in the hopes that he/she will return before we finish.) I hope this turns out alright. Help!

Hey! I recently joined the CVU with VandalProof. I got hold on a vanity article called Yellow Bird Project created by a user called Yellowbirdproject. I flagged the article for Speedy Delete and a few minutes later, a brand new account called Lua123 removed the tag, so I have reasons to believe it's some sockpuppetry. Anyways, what should I do with the user YPB (that blanks his user page by the way and ignores ALL warnings)? Thanks. --Deenoe 00:25, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Project Sharks dispute

Are you able to offer any help in this case?

There is a Sharks WikiProject that originally was set up on userspace in October to make up members and then moved to its current, official location in August. Just after that a user, User:Unisouth made another project, but since Sharks was taken he called his Shark. Since he began he has just stolen stuff from Sharks and tried to pass it off as his own. So things that took Editors of Sharks hours to do, he just took and added to his in minutes. I know that Misplaced Pages is GFDL so this doesnt bother us so much. We tried request a merge with his to have just one project numerous times, but he always refused. Then he made up somethign called a co-project which meant both projects would exist, everyone voted against it but he still tried to implement it. I don't think he understands the voting procedure.

Looking at his userspace everything on his discussion page seems to be about him stealing images and essentially vandalising stuff. I am not sure why he hasn't been blocked, it may sound severe but he is the most worthy person i have met on wikipedia for blocking. What are we supposed to do about this, everything we try to do to reason with him or just continue with the project he tries to outdo us, and it just seems petty. We are trying to improve shark articles while he is trying to have a project to his name, just for the sake of it. --chris_huh 14:16, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Don't worry about this, the Misplaced Pages:WikiProject_Council is talking about it on their talk page. --chris_huh 20:54, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Privacy Issue

In User:Essjay/Archives/41 under the heading "User:Compaquser" a real name of a person was written against Wikipedias Privacy Policy and under "The "right to vanish" Policy by User: Kirjtc2 on August 4,2006 . This should be erased as the policy should be enforced. Especially if they have departed Misplaced Pages . I find this to be a poor repesentation of Misplaced Pages .

CovenantD

User CovenantD has been bothering other editors the same way you claimed in his talk page. I'm making all the complainers aware that we're that he has been doing this to several articles and editors.

I wrote him this: From my understanding you were blocked for 6 hours because of your 3RR violations in Clock King, please use the time to think about your actions. You've been a very inconsiderate user. the purpose of wikipedia is to make well sourced informative articles, not un sourced uninformative articles that don't ilustrate the content. If you don't like the topic, go to an article about a topic you like and provide research, tables, infoboxes and images according to guideline. Thank you--The Judge 02:10, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

Thank you!

Thank you for writing an updated PHP version of the Interiot's tool. I love to able to see my edit count again. It is useful and VERY COOL! Royalbroil 12:46, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

New IRC bot needed

Hello Essjay. I do not know if you are following the discussion at WikiEN-I about WP:BLP. We are discussing the possibiity to have a similar bot as the one running at vandalism-en-wp, that monitors the newly created Recent Changes page for articles on living people, that can be used by the newly forming Misplaced Pages:BLP Patrol. ACCUSATION OF SOCKPUPPETRY LODGED AGAINST ME BY ANOTHER WIKIPEDIAN WHO HAS REVERTED (ALMOST) ALL MY EDITS

I used the (helpme) function and received this reply:

"Well since I have no way of verifying the truth of otherwise of if you really only started today (From my perspective someone who genuinely started today would say that, but so would someone who is trying to pretend they only started today). I suggest you discuss it with the person who believes you are a sockpuppet, I have no magic wand to make them believe differently." --User:pgk 15:31, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

I contacted the individual (User:Demiurge) making the charges against me explaining that I was not who he evidently is mistaking me for, but I have not heard back from him.

This boils down to some unfortunate coincidence:

a) My ISP is similar to some malfeasants, but all I can say, not being a computer systems expert, is that I live in Manhattan, NY, in a building filled with people with computers, some of whom undoubtedly use Misplaced Pages.

b) My new page edit (Robin Livingstone) was not deleted or recommended for deletion, and a former editor of that exact same page was none other than User:pgk -- talk about coincidences!! And why did not User:Demiurge recommend that page for deletion, perhaps he liked its contents, which would indicate extreme subjectivity and abuse of power (although what power he has as a non-administrator is not clear to me, as a first time user).

I do not believe my edits should be vandalized by someone who suspects something, and I believe that there should be a checks and balances system to force him to desist until he is authorized to do what he is doing (he is not an administrator, which I have discerned from his/her own userpage).

User creation log

I find that on the user creation log, in about 1 minute there is at least 1 new user. Why is this so? Is Misplaced Pages becoming more popular? •Sean•gorter• 07:13, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Actually, according to Special:Log/newusers, there's a new user registered every few seconds. However, statistics were gathered that most of the don't edit at all or are indefinitely blocked right away. I suspect that only once every few minutes do we actually get a real new contributor. Misplaced Pages:Requests for checkuser/Case/Digi Wiki

Hi Essjay.

You made a CheckUser some time ago about this user. I don't understand who you did a CheckUser on? Did you only check the two users listed at the link, or did you check all those users listed at User:Mikkalai/arkven#Alphabetic list?

Thx, Fred-Chess 17:41, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Elections

I am frankly appalled by the use of a dysfunctional (and discredited) electoral system called approval voting to fill a single empty position on the board of trustees. It is impossible to rationally decide whom to vote for in this system unless you have a fairly accurate idea of how others are going to vote; in the absence of opinion polls, this is indeed an impossibility.

Other systems avoid these problems, the obvious choice would be a single transferable vote system.

I'm trying to find out who decided to use this system, whether there was any discussion leading up to it, and whether there's any way of moving to a sane system.

Can you help?

When will the election results be announced?

I realise you and the other election officials must be busy. I'd appreciate it if you could find the time to answer the questions on Meta at When will the election results be announced?. Thanks. Carcharoth 13:01, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Essjay has been missing in action for over a month, so you probably won't get a fast response. Perhaps you should ask one of the other election officials. MER-C 02:16, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
