Situated in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodship (since 1999), previously in Olsztyn Voivodship (1975-1998).
History
The town was previously known as Ortelsburg, East Prussia after the Teutonic Knight Ortolf von Trier (1349-1371), the builder of Ortulfsburg. The first mention of Szczytno was in 1360 on the arrival of Masovian colonists.
