The "deep state" or derin devlet is an influential and informal anti-democratic coalition of power within Turkish politics. Similar in nature to the military industrial complex in the United States, it is composed of elements within the Turkish military, security and intelligence services, the judicial branch, and key leaders of organized crime movements.

The political agenda of the deep state involves an allegiance to nationalism and state interests. Violence and other means of pressure have historically been employed to ensure these interests are met within the political landscape visible to the public.
