Production

In March 2016, it was announced that Warner Bros. would bring director David Ayer and actor Will Smith back for a Suicide Squad sequel, to be shot in 2017 after the pair completed filming another project, Bright, in 2016. The following month, Ayer expressed an interest in making the sequel R-rated. Karen Fukuhara had stated that she wanted to explore Katana's backstory in the sequel. In December 2016, Ayer exited the sequel when he started developing another project, Gotham City Sirens, for the studio.

On February 15, 2017, it was revealed that Mel Gibson was in very early negotiations to helm the sequel, while the studio was also looking for other directors including Daniel Espinosa. On July 11, 2017, it was reported that Jaume Collet-Serra had been a studio's front-runner choice to direct the sequel with the schedule to begin production in mid-2018, later he withdrew in the same month after he joined the Dwayne Johnson's starring Disney's Jungle Cruise, and the studio was in search for another director. Jared Leto will reprise his role as the Joker in the film. Late August 2017, Variety's Justin Kroll posted on his Twitter confirming that the film would not start production until fall 2018 because of Smith's filming schedule of Disney's Aladdin and Paramount's Gemini Man.
