Monarch School was a year round, co-ed therapeutic boarding school located in Heron, Montana. It closed abruptly in September, 2017, with its owners citing unsustainable student enrollment as the primary reason. Monarch students moved up a five-step system throughout their stay contingent on their performance in classes, work crews, and group therapy. The students at the school participated in group sessions three to four times a week.

History

Monarch School, INC was incorporated in Idaho by founder Patrick McKenna in September 2000. According to The Mission Statement, "The Monarch School exists to provide young adults with the foundation of knowledge and self-awareness to achieve their dreams as a healthy human being."

As the school did not have an official campus when it opened, McKenna ran the school out of his North Idaho home. In late 2001, students moved from the Mckenna residence onto the Monarch campus in Heron, Montana, a setting described as "160 acres of pure heaven."

The school housed a kitchen, farm, equestrian barn, greenhouse, and forestry shed, almost all of which were built by students by hand over the years of its existence and all of which were student-run. Students participated work crews, assigned labor like chipping ice, building furniture and fences and buildings, animal husbandry and forest management.

Admissions

Monarch School offered year-round enrollment, and cost of tuition was a "flat monthly tuition rate of $4000."

Alleged Abuse

Starting around 2011, a few former students of the school came together to compile information on their experiences for prospective parents and students to see. Claims of medical neglect, psychological abuse and false advertising were chronicled on the Wiki Fornits group. These concerned students later formed a group on Facebook.com called 'Monarch School Survivors' that still serves to this day as a place to share experiences and heal from the alleged abuse that occurred at the hands of unlicensed "life counselors". Patrick McKenna (formerly Patrick Stambusky) owner and founder of the school, worked at both CEDU and RMA previously, and is known for advocating for background checks for programs like Monarch to be relaxed to the point that applicants should not be required to be fingerprinted upon hiring.
