It is a cognate to English name Smith. Kovács or Kovač means blacksmith in Hungarian and some South and West Slavic languages also.
There are 228,274 people in Hungary who are called Kovács; thus Kovács is the second most common surname among Hungarians. There are approximately 9,500 people with this surname also in Croatia, most of them living in northern and eastern parts of the country naigbouring to Hungary.
