Republic Polytechnic (Chinese: 共和理工学院) is the fifth and newest polytechnic to be set up in Singapore and utilises the problem-based learning (PBL) approach. The polytechnic currently has 5 schools and 5 centres, that offer diplomas in Information Technology, Engineering, Science and New Media, and an enrollment of over 4000 students. The School for Sports, Health and Leisure (SHL) was recently set up to cater to students from the Singapore Sports School (SSS).
The polytechnic's campus was located at Tanglin Road but have since moved to Woodlands. Republic Polytechnic have marked it last day in their campus in Tanglin on 3rd of March and have officially moved to the new campus situated in Woodlands. 3rd of March also marked the last day for their first batch of students who are graduating in year 2006. The first graduation ceremony is held on 30 May 2006.
Republic Polytechnic's Learning Approach
Republic Polytechnic is the first institution in Singapore to adopt for all its diploma courses, PBL(Problem Based Learning). It focuses on solving a problem for each lesson by gathering information and presenting the solution of the problem by the end of the day through a series of meeting and group discussion.
Republic Polytechnic is also a paperless orgainzation in which tests and problems are being done through the usage of computer and thus not requiring the usage of paper.

STA: School of Technology for the Arts
Although only 2 years old, STA is already host to some of Singapore's more prominent young artists. Among them is one 18 year old Guo Yuan, unofficially known as "DJ Muthu Curry". 2nd Place Winner of the 2006 Heiniken Thirst competition after a mere 2 months of practice. She is set to become one of the leading club DJs in Singapore's club scene.
Other notables include staff who where once directed local sitcoms and dramas such as "Tripple 9: and "Under One Roof". Assistant Director Graham Perkins (a.k.a 'Scary White Man') whose resume includes time in Apple, MTV, Adobe and Levi's. Varian Lim who, still a student at the time, pioneed Singapore’s first secondary school-based multimedia resource room in 1991.
While still lacking a render farm for 3D artists STA students are particularly fortunate due to the soon-to-be-completed Republic Polytechnic Cultural Center. A massive 5 story building with a footprint the size of a soccer field which contains what is will probably be the largest (a staggering 2 stories) greenscreen in singapore. Several production suites for music and art and a retail area for budding artists and sculptors to showcase their products to the residents of northern singapore. To whom the RPCC serves as a the cultural hub.
Another unique feature of RP are the student organised courses where the few with exceptional talent (relatively) or prior experience in the arts industry hold short classes to educate their younger peers. Since attendance is voluntary, we (students) expect this to produce two "classes" of student. The technically proficient, well prepared kind and the artistically lacking, mediocre variety.
Student Mentality
Students at Republic Poly tend to exhibit a more questioning nature when compared to those educated via more traditional means. However there is a strong reliance on infromation found on Misplaced Pages that is rarely (if ever) analysed or verified by the students before it is used in their solutions to the daily "Problem Statement"
However the "questioning nature" or Republicans is limited to questioning each other and not so much the problem they are told so solve.
The general sentiment within the poly with regards to solving problems is "Find online, then copy/paste into the powerpoint. Read from the slides during the presentation" While this behaviour is usually frowned upon by the facilitators (RP's equivalent of lecturers), the grading system is such that, if a student manages to say the right key words and reads audibly without stuttering and manages to make eye-contact, he/she will usually score a B.
