His then-partner, Jane Hamsher, wrote a book about their turbulent process making that film called Killer Instinct. In 1997, Quentin Tarantino, who was upset by remarks attributed to Murphy in Killer Instinct, assaulted Murphy at a Hollywood restaurant. Harvey Weinstein, reportedly intervened physically after Tarantino sucker punched an unsuspecting Murphy. According to Murphy, Tarantino "sucker-punched" him, but the two have long since reconciled and put the incident behind them.
Murphy is a graduate of Chaminade High School and Georgetown University as well as the USC School of Cinema-Television. He is married to filmmaker Susan Montford. Often works with Rick Benattar. He is the originating producer of Transformers (2007 film).
