William T. Bielby is a sociologist best known for his research on how organizational policies and practices create and sustain gender and racial inequality in the workplace and for writings on how to minimize workplace discrimination. From 1977 to 2004 he was on the faculty of University of California, Santa Barbara, where he served as chair of the Department of Sociology for six years. From 2005 to 2007 he was Undergraduate Chair in the Department of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. He retired from his position as Professor of Sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2017. He was the President of the American Sociological Association in 2002-2003. He studied electrical engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and earned his doctorate in sociology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Bielby testifies frequently in class action employment discrimination litigation. In Wal-Mart_Stores,_Inc._v._Dukes he used the social framework analysis methodology to conclude that two aspects of Wal-Mart's culture, centralized personnel policy and managerial subjective decision making in the field, led “decisions about compensation and promotion" to be vulnerable to gender bias.

In spring of 1961, with two of his classmates from Roosevelt School in Dolton,_Illinois, Bielby started his band The Newports. The band performed in the Chicago area from 1961 until 1966. The band reunited in July of 2014. The nine piece band's playlist features an eclectic mix of blues, rock, and soul. They perform frequently in the greater Chicago area, in northwest Indiana, and southwest Michigan.

Since 2011 Bielby has also been co-owner of Blais Design, an interior design studio located in Union_Pier,_Michigan
