Gold star lesbian is a term used by the LGBT+ community to describe a lesbian who has only had a sexual relationship with women. Use of this term is a point of controversy in the lesbian community.
Definition and scope
The 'gold star' term itself is thought to have originated from such objectification and identity policing within the LGBT+ community and was reclaimed as a positive label. Later the term was popularized on shows like The L Word and A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila.
The related term gold star gay may also be applied to gay men who have only slept with men, however due to sexism within the LGBT community gold star gay men are looked upon more positively than gold star lesbians. Gold stars often use the term in a frivolous way to compliment their sexuality in a pattern of word reclamation and positive use of labels often seen within the LGBT+ community. Lesbians may use the label to assert their sexuality despite other facets of their identity such as femmeness, disability or religion, or they may simply use it as a tongue-in-cheek expression of gay pride.
