"No Tears Left to Cry" is a song by American singer Ariana Grande from her upcoming fourth studio album. Written by Grande, Savan Kotecha and its producers Max Martin and Ilya, it was released by Republic Records as the album's lead single on April 20, 2018.
Release and promotion
On April 9, 2018, Variety reported that Grande is set to release the first single from her upcoming fourth album on April 27. She was seen wearing a sweatshirt to Disneyland with the song's title written upside down across the front. Her brother Frankie Grande, collaborator Victoria Monét, best friend Colleen Ballinger and Elizabeth Gillies as well as boyfriend Mac Miller also shared selfies of themselves wearing the same sweatshirt. Hits later confirmed that the song would be released a week sooner.
On April 17, Grande broke the silence on Twitter with a tear drop emoji, which she also posted to her Instagram story, before writing in another tweet: "Missed you." Shortly afterwards, she tweeted upside down text which read "no tears left to cry" followed by "4.20", revealing the name of the single and its release date. She previewed a short snippet of the track and revealed its artwork on April 19. She also hosted a listening party in London earlier in the week.
Composition
"No Tears Left to Cry" is a dance-pop song with 90's influences, performed in the key of A minor with a tempo that starts off with 100 beats per minute at the beginning of the song, which then speeds up to 122 beats per minute. The verses follow a chord progression of A–F–G.
Critical reception
"No Tears Left to Cry" received praise from music critics upon release. The Guardian's Laura Snapes gave the song four out of five stars and found it akin to Grande's One Love Manchester concert as "one of the most joyful, defiant celebrations of pop and the communities it inspires". In NME, Nick Reilly complimented the track's "hugely infectious" chorus, while Hannah Mylrea regarded it as euphoria and concluded, "Tackling hate and devastation with hope and disco, 'No Tears Left to Cry' is a triumph." Meaghan Garvey of Pitchfork said "the results are superb, evoking turn-of-the-millennium, vocal-led garage buoyed by the kind of gospel delivery that Grande pulls off better than any of her pop peers." In his review for Billboard, Andrew Unterberger wrote that the song "doesn't feel like the first-round KO fans might have expected from Ariana's highly anticipated return, but may turn out to be something richer , 'No Tears' is a grower, not to be fully appreciated on first listen." Chris Wilman of Variety called it "the breeziest, most danceable kind of post-traumatic recovery anthem", but believed it was not among Max Martin's best productions and lacked emotion.
Music video
Directed by Dave Meyers, the music video made its premiere on April 20, 2018 at midnight on Vevo.
Live performance
Grande performed the song live for the first time on April 20, 2018 at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, during Kygo's set.
