- University of Wisconsin–Madison, which was founded in 1848 as the University of Wisconsin, and is now the flagship campus of the University of Wisconsin System.
- The enlarged University of Wisconsin resulting from the renaming of several of the state's universities, beginning in 1956 with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus and continuing with Green Bay (1968) and Parkside (1968).
- The University of Wisconsin System, which has been informally known as the University of Wisconsin since its founding in 1971.
