/ e / is a free and open-source operating system for smartphones based on the Android mobile platform. It is developed on a fork of LineageOS. The Operating System is developed by the e.foundation lead by Gaël Duval.
Background
In 2017 Gaël Duval, through a series of articles titled “Leaving Apple & Google: my / e / odyssey” (one, two, three) proposed the concept of an Operating System which would not have any user data spying applications or services. This was followed by a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign.
Development
The first beta mobile Minimum Viable Product (MVP) based on Lineage OS 14.1 was released on 12 September 2018 with the source code available on Gitlab.
The second beta MVP based on Lineage OS 15.1 was released on November 22, 2018.
Community
At present / e / development builds cover 49 devices and has an active user base of about one thousand users. To interact with its users and provide software issue support, the /e/ team uses telegram channels and a web based community forum .
