The term Neo-Confederate is often employed to describe movements that seek to reconstitute the Confederate States of America. Neo-confederate groups are often pro-South and pro-states' rights, and some are accused of practicing bigotry.

The term "Neo-Confederate" is also employed by some as a pejorative description, or slur, for writers, historians, and cultural or historical heritage organizations that take a southern perspective. This use is often intended to create a false association with extremist organizations, even when the described person or group does not belong to those organizations or affiliate with or share in beliefs of racism or secessionism.
