Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke |
Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai (lit. What is this relationship called?) is a Hindi-Language television drama airs on weekdays on Star Plus and streams on the digital platform Hotstar. It premiered on 12 January 2009 and is the fourth longest running Indian television soap opera. The show is produced by Rajan Shahi under the banner of Director's Kut Productions.
The show initially starred Hina Khan and Karan Mehra, and 2016 onward, after the death of the character of Hina Khan, featured Shivangi Joshi and Mohsin Khan in lead roles. In March 2019, its popularity led to the creation of a spin-off titled Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke starring Rhea Sharma and Shaheer Sheikh.
Summary
The story originally begins with Akshara Maheshwari's marriage arranged with Naitik Singhania, in a large Marwari joint family based in Udaipur. They struggle to know each other, and gradually begin to understand, support and love each other. Akshara and Naitik soon give birth to a son, Naksh. Unfortunately, Naitik falls into a coma due to an accident.
Parallel stories include Naitik's sisters - Nandini, and Rashmi. The series has also focused on Naitik's step-siblings, and Akshara's elder brother Shaurya's love story with her best friend Varsha.
4 Years Later
Naitik recovers from coma and has to struggle to bond with his young, mischievous son Naksh. He also has to face his mother Gayatri's death, and his father Rajshekar's remarriage to a widow Devyani who has two children.
After two years, Akshara and Naitik have a daughter Naira. Soon Naitik's uncle Mahendra Pratap dies, and his widow Kaveri blames Akshara for the same, banishing them. They along with their children move out of the continent.
10 years later
Naitik has relocated to South Africa and the family has been living in Cape Town since. Naksh returns to Udaipur and convinces his grandaunt Kaveri to forgive an innocent Akshara, and thus the family returns and reunites.
Naksh falls in love with Tara, but he brakes the alliance due to her prenup on the day of their wedding. On the other hand, fearing of wrongly blamed for her friend's death even by Akshara, and scared of imprisonment, Naira escapes Udaipur.
7 Years Later
Naira is living in an orphanage in Rishikesh, and has grown up as headstrong but insecure and arrogant. She soon meets Kartik Goenka, a young and positive man, and amidst their several fights, begins to soften her personality.
Akshara reaches Rishikesh to fund the orphanage and finds Naira there. She brings her back on the pretext of saving her orphanage. Naira begins to accept her family, and the Singhanias unite with her again.
Kartik arrives in Udaipur as an employee of Naitik, and begins to stay with the Maheshwaris. He eventually falls in love with Naira, and she too confesses her love for him. Unfortunately, Akshara is killed in a sudden car crash, caused by Kartik's cousin Mansi, for which Kartik is blamed. They realise the accident, and soon the families reconcile. Kartik and Naira get married in a grand ceremony.
Kartik hates his father Manish and step mother Suvarna as he remarried her after his mother's death and in fact, believes he was responsible for the same. The confusion is soon cleared out, and the trio reunite. They also help unite Kartik's half-brother Shubham with the family. Unfortunately, Shubham dies of overdose, and everyone blames Naira for hiding his drug addiction. Kartik and Naira separate again as Naira leaves.
2 Years Later
Naira along with Naitik lives in Mumbai. Kartik is a professor now, and Naira signs up for the same classes he teaches there. They realise their love and finally reunite and marry again after divorcing and after some reluctance by Kartik's stepmother Suvarna.
Naira soon undergoes a surgery for a brain clot. Kartik's sister and Naksh's wife Keerti, and Naira, are later both revealed to be pregnant, but Naira loses her baby, and Kartik swaps the babies of both. Naksh finds this out as Keerti wakes up from a coma, and Naira ultimately loses her memory. She shifts back to the Singhanias, and befriends Sid (Kartik's fake identity) while resuming her dancing lessons. Her young cousins Kuhu and Mishti help make Naira realise she loves Kartik. Naira finally regains her memory in a Holi celebration, and Kartik and Naira reunite.
Further, Samarth falls for a pregnant Gayu, and after convincing their grandmother, after Vivaan's unfortunate death, they are finally married. Naira brings to light the indecent behaviour of the Goenkas' granduncle Puru, and he is thrown out. Naira now enters the business after Manish's heartattack. Kartik feels insecure of Naira's busy routine, and also becomes jealous of her colleague Mihir. Naira finds out she is pregnant and goes to tell Kartik, but he questions her after witnessing her and Mihir come out of the same room, to which Naira rebukes him and storms out of the Goenka house without informing him of her pregnancy. She then meets with an accident, and is assumed dead.
5 Years Later
Naira and Kartik have again separated. Naira lives in Goa with their son Kairav, while Kartik has found solace in his nephew Vansh. A woman Vedika is also living in Goenkas house as her father took promise to Kartik to protect her. Goenka Family wants Kartik to marry Vedika. Meanwhile, Kairav mistakenly calls Kartik and addresses him as "Papa", frequently taking advice from him. Unaware and curious, Kartik agrees to go to Goa with Vedika for her exhibition only so he can meet Kairav and spends some quality time with him. Naira is distressed on seeing him while Kartik decides not to meet Kairav again and hurt his feelings, unaware that Naira is alive and Kairav is his son, and leaves. On hearing about Suhasini's heartattack, Naira decides to return Udaipur. Elsewhere the family prepares for Kartik and Vedika's engagement but it halts due to Kairav’s sickness.
