For Whom the Bell Tolls is a 1943 film based on the famous novel by Ernest Hemingway. It stars Gary Cooper, Ingrid Bergman, Akim Tamiroff and Katina Paxinou. The movie was adapted by Dudley Nichols, and directed by Sam Wood. Great attention to detail in keeping with the accurate depiction and the novel's successful translation to film was aided by Hemingway himself, who was present on the set during filming.

Awards

The movie won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress (Katina Paxinou) and was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Gary Cooper), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Akim Tamiroff), Best Actress in a Leading Role (Ingrid Bergman), Best Art Direction-Interior Decoration, Color, Best Cinematography, Color, Best Film Editing, Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture and Best Picture.

Other Versions

There was a Lux Radio Theater version broadcast on February 11, 1945 and retained Gary Cooper, Ingrid Bergman, and Akim Tamiroff for their respective characters.
