Kevin Earl Federline (born March 21 1978) is an American professional dancer, model and rapper.

Career

Backup Dancer

Early on, Federline worked as a backup dancer for Christina Milian, *NSYNC, Justin Timberlake, P!nk, Michael Jackson, the band LFO, and future wife Britney Spears' opening act.

Musician

After being introduced by his pregnant wife, Federline performed his first "official" single titled "Lose Control" as the final act of the 2006 Teen Choice Awards. Federline was nominated in another category (Teen Choice Award for Male Red Carpet Fashion Icon) though he did not win. Federline's music performance on the Teen Choice Awards received mixed reviews at best. The Associated Press described the performance as "enthusiastic" and concluded that Federline "apparently" "could rap." The same conclusion was not reached by some within the hip hop community, as Elliot Wilson, chief editor of XXL Magazine quipped that Federline should be ignored, stating, "he's a joke, basically." Federline's previous single, "PopoZão," released on New Year's Day, 2006, was panned by many music industry critics, with Entertainment Weekly describing PopoZão as worse than expected, and music trade magazine Billboard echoing that the song was "a monument to mediocrity."

Federline released his debut album, Playing with Fire on October 31, 2006, via his own record label "Federation Records," which is being distributed through Reincarnate Music. Initial critical reviews of Federline’s debut album were mixed. Ron Harris of the Associated Press enthused: “All jokes aside about his climb to fame, Kevin Federline’s album “Playing With Fire” (Federline Records) is a credible, entertaining debut. I kid you not.... The streets of Fresno County are no joke, and good for Fed-Rock if wants to boast about surviving that life.” Preston Jones of Slant Magazine stated, "Federline can only rap about weed, his bank account, his wife, fighting anyone who looks at him sideways, and partying 'til three days from now—roughly in that order.... An oh-so-tiny sliver of myself kind of wanted Playing With Fire to be less aggressively shitty than it is, if only so the restless, rapacious media would ease off this tattered target of its ire—unfortunately, this disc is just as disposable and dumb as you'd expect."

Despite months of promotion, Federline's album debuted in the Billboard 200 at #151, with first-week sales reported at 6,485. According to SoundScan, Playing with Fire placed 16th-best out of 19 new releases that week. Second week sales were far worse, with only 1,200 copies sold, dropping the album from being ranked within the Billboard 200. The Playing with Fire Tour was a commercial failure. In New York City, Federline performed before an estimated audience of 300, out of a total seating capacity of 1,500 at Webster Hall. Despite giving away free tickets, approximately three-quarters of the seats at his Chicago House of Blues performance remained empty. Four of the eight scheduled Playing with Fire Tour performances (Cleveland, Atlantic City, Anaheim, and San Diego) were ultimately cancelled. Ticket sales for his last scheduled concert in Los Angeles stalled, prompting concert organizers at the concert hall to give away tickets. Attendance for that final concert was standing room only, ending the tour on a positive note.

Model

Federline has been signed to model for the Five Star Vintage line by the San Francisco-based Blue Marlin clothing company. The initial series of ads ran in August 2006, and was subsequently extended for Holiday 2006. The line he modeled for the Fall 2006 has been the top selling line in Macy's, Kitson in Los Angeles and Lord & Taylor. ]

Television appearances

Federline co-starred with Spears on the 2005 reality television show, Britney and Kevin: Chaotic, which consisted of home videos shot by the couple. He also appeared in the 2004 movie, You Got Served. Federline subsequently guest-starred as a street hoodlum in an episode of CSI that aired on October 12, 2006 in the USA and Canada. He also guest starred on the new NBC Show 1 Vs 100 along with the Cast of Las Vegas, which aired December 1,2006.

Professional Wrestling

Federline appeared on the October 16, 2006 and October 23, 2006 editions of WWE RAW, in which he got into staged (or worked in pro wrestling argot) physical altercations with WWE Champion John Cena. He appeared again during the November 5 pay-per-view event Cyber Sunday, hitting Cena with King Booker's World Heavyweight Championship and helping Booker retain his title. The next night, November 6, he challenged Cena to a match at the New Year's Day edition of RAW, which Cena accepted.

Born in Fresno, California, Federline is noted for his marriage to American dance-pop superstar Britney Spears. They married on September 18, 2004. Federline previously dated actress Shar Jackson, with whom he has two children. Kevin and Shar's daughter, Kori, was born on July 31, 2002, and their son, Kaleb, was born on July 20, 2004. He has also fathered two children with Spears, Sean Preston (born on September 14, 2005) and Jayden James (born on September 12, 2006).

Federline courted Spears while Shar Jackson was pregnant with his child. This prompted Shar Jackson to comment that, "it wasn't like just breaking up a relationship. It was like breaking up a family."

On November 7, 2006, Spears filed for a divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. Federline was in Toronto at the time promoting his new album for the Canadian music station MuchMusic, and it has been widely speculated that he received the news via text message the night before. The moment that Kevin received the text message was caught on camera. The Associated Press reported that a day after Spears filed divorce papers, Kevin Federline counter-filed court papers seeking spousal support and sole custody of the couple’s two children.

The couple's 60-page prenuptial agreement, prepared by Hollywood attorney Laura Wasser, apparently entitles Federline to $300,000 per year for half the number of years the couple was married. Under that formula, Federline will be entitled to $300,000 from Spears, since they were married two years. Federline will also receive 50% of the proceeds from the sale of their Malibu home, and will be allowed to keep any gift received from Spears under $10,000 in value. ]
