Evergreen Terrace is a suburban street on the east-side of the fictional town of Springfield, in the cartoon series The Simpsons. It is notable as the street where the Simpson family lives, at 742 Evergreen Terrace. The Flanders family live next door, on the Simpsons' left as viewed from the street, at 740 Evergreen Terrace. In the episode New Kid on the Block, Sylvia Winfield and her husband are shown to be occupying the house on the other side of the Simpsons home (744 Evergreen Terrace). The Winfields decided to move to Florida and sell their house to divorcée Ruth Powers, who moves in with her teenage daughter, Laura. Architecturally, the houses on the road are all detached two-story houses of varying styles and colors, most likely a 4 bedroom 2,000 sq. ft. home (the revealed size of the Simpsons' house), as all houses look alike. The houses all feature reasonably large front and back yards, built-in garages, basements and outdoor mailboxes. In When Flanders Failed, Ned Flanders says to Homer, "Afforable tract housing made us neighbors, you made us friends."

Residents

The Simpsons and Flanders are the only regular Simpsons characters known to live on Evergreen Terrace. Ruth and Laura Powers are not consider regular characters. Other episodes hint that Milhouse Van Houten, Chief Wiggum and Ralph and Apu Nahasapeemapetilon live on the road. In one episode, the police thought 742 Evergreen Terrace was where Reverend Lovejoy lived. He lived next door to Snake. In the "Bart's Comet" episode, he also ran across the street yelling "It's all over! We don't have a prayer!" That heavily hinted that Reverend Lovejoy lived on the street. Disco Stu, Principal Skinner and Mrs. Glick were all at the street's rummage sale in the "Two Bad Neighbors" episode, thus hinting that they live there too. In the Virtual Springfield computer game, Principal Skinner and his mother live at about 1000, and Snake is on the 900 block. In the video game The Simpsons: Hit and Run, The Wiggums live three houses from the Flanders. In the episode "Two Bad Neighbors", No. 741 was the home of former President of the United States George H. W. Bush. However, at the end of the episode Bush moved out and former President Gerald Ford moved in.

Location

The street appears to be a fairly major thoroughfare; a lot of characters drive past the house, it has its own interstate exit, the school bus stops there (conveniently, the bus stop is right outside number 742), and Kent Brockman frequently provides news reports from the street. In one episode, "Pokey Mom", Marge looks out through the kitchen window looking to see a prison very close by (yet in many episodes, we see the prison in the city central and on a separate island, and in a later shot the school is seen in the same location, from the same perspective). In "Homer and Apu", the Kwik-E-Mart convenience store is not far from Evergreen Terrace, although the family is often seen driving there, and Bart regularly skateboards to the door. In "Homer the Great", it was shown that the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant's parking lot extended all the way to the border of the Simpson's back yard. However, it has never been shown to be the case since. In the episode "Brake My Wife, Please", Moe's Tavern was at Evergreen Terrace, as it was only a few houses away from the Simpson house. In "She Used to Be My Girl", Marge says Evergreen Terrace is "the street that smells like pee."

Name Origin

Creator Matt Groening attended Evergreen State College, a school in Washington. The address was 742 Evergreen Terrace. This is probably where the name came from.

In an episode aired on September 17, 2006, the Simpson address was shown as 740 Evergreen Terrace, which conflicts with what is written earlier. It also underwent many address changes, although by far the majority is 742 Evergreen Terrace.
