Picture of the day George N. Barnard George Norman Barnard (December 23, 1819 – February 4, 1902) was an American photographer who was one of the first to use daguerreotype, the first commercially available form of photography, in the United States. A fire in 1853 destroyed the grain elevators in Oswego, New York, an event Barnard photographed. Historians consider these some of the first "news" photographs. Barnard also photographed Abraham Lincoln's 1861 inauguration. Barnard is best known for American Civil War era photos. He was the official army photographer for the Military Division of the Mississippi commanded by Union general William T. Sherman; his 1866 book, Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign, showed the devastation of the war. This photograph, by Mathew Brady, shows Barnard c. 1865.Photograph credit: Mathew Brady; restored by Adam Cuerden ArchiveMore featured pictures...

Welcome message

Thanks for unblocking me, but I'm a little confused about why you included the welcome template (and at the top of my talk page). I've been an active user for around two years. Twinxor t 02:42, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

how come ur so special u hav the anti vandal thing and i dont? plz unblock user the.chihuahua . he told me he gave out his password to some of his friends because they told him they could spice up his page and help him make contributions. so he gave out his password and then later he said he got messages that said that he was vandalizing pages he never even touched. he thinks it was his friends who he gave his password to. plz consider this. thanks. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.88.254.2 (talkcontribs) 01:02, 3 December 2006 (UTC).

See User:Lupin/Anti-vandal tool. As for The.chihuahua (talk contribs), he will never be unblocked since if what you say is indeed true then the security of that account can no longer be vouched for. User:Joehogian

Hello! I just learned of wikipedia, and have been finding it very useful. I found a few articles that I thought should have been edited, so i took the liberty and edited them. One page that I edited on (eragon) was left the way I left it. But another page I made a minor change to was changed back, and then you banned me. This page was alchemy. I was wondering why you banned me, and when I will get editing priveleges back.

-Joehogian — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Joehogian (talkcontribs) 03:42, 3 December 2006 (UTC).

Hi, your block log is empty, so I've never blocked your account "Joehogian" before. Are you sure you weren't autoblocked at the time instead? I can't review the block you're referring to unless you provide me with the full details including the reason and the IP address. --  Netsnipe   ►  11:09, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Page protection of User talk:Eowbotm1

Hello Netsnipe,

I noticed that you protected the page User talk:Eowbotm1. I was the one that discovered User:Eowbotm and his various socks, and who posted about it on WP:AN/I to get him blocked.

Anyway, since this user is denying that he's Eowbotm1, it may be useful to post this link somewhere on his talk page, which is a diff of an edit where he admits that he is Eowbotm on his user page. I'd do this myself, but the page is protected, so your assistance in the matter would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance! — Lantoka 07:57, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

P.S. This is a better diff.

Follow up: Eowbotm's back on User:Fortunefaded and vandalized your user page. He's blocked now though. —Lantoka 22:28, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Reviewing blocks

You said: "I'd also like to ask you that in future, for the sake of fairness and due process that you do not decline the unblock requests of users you block yourself unless the request is pure nonsense or abusive. From an ethical, reviews of blocks are meant to be carried out by a 3rd party."

Will do. I thought it was pretty clear in this case, given the editor's user page (GNAA, etc., etc., etc.), that the unblock request was pure nonsense. Also, I was under the impression that the unblock request would still be visible and reviewed by other admins. I'll be more careful in the future. --Yamla 16:28, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Block/unblock feature

I know it's been a while, but I've completed the feature you requested, which queries whether the user is blocked or unblocked before directing to the appropriate page. It should work with any user page, including redirects.

It may still have a bug or two, so if you find errors, let me know, along with which page you were on, what your error console/dialog returned as the error, and which browser you're using.

Thanks very much for your idea, and I hope the new feature works as you hoped. haz (talk) e 17:02, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, but unfortunately, it doesn't work properly. It always brings up Special:Blockip regardless of whether a user is blocked or not. Would you like me to lend you my account for a day so you can debug it? --  Netsnipe  ►  13:44, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
Strange, it works OK for me. For blocked users, it goes straight to the unblock page.
Go to a blocked user's user (talk) page and use User options > Vandals > Current block list. Does the page look like this? Image:Cactions bug ipblocklist.JPG
Probably a silly question, but could you try Ctrl-F5ing?
As for the 2 errors, the first is a global CSS error that's not my doing, I actually reported it this morning to MediaWiki talk:Common.css but was told that it's going to stay there as it's not causing any harm.
I noticed the second error yesterday, as it was the first time that I gave myself "admin" powers on the tool. The script looks for an undelete tab to remove, even if one doesn't exist. Shouldn't be too hard to remove.
Let me know what happens with Ctrl-F5. Oh, another thought: hovering over the "Block/unblock" link, do you get an HTTP or Javascript link coming up in the statusbar? Anyway, get back to me. Haza-w.debug 16:11, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
JS error fixed. Clearly I can't do anything about the CSS error, it's nothing to do with me... I still can't see any reason why "block/unblock" shouldn't be working. Try Ctrl-F5; if that fails, then ding me again. Haza-w.debug 16:36, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
Fixed it! You admin types get an extra "block" link which threw my script right off. Should be fine now. haz (talk) e 16:44, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

God's country ?

I was doing a little bit of work on the Pabst Brewing Company page, and out of curiosity did a search on "God's country" to see if anything had been written about their slogan. I found it and its variations were permanently blocked. But I can't see the history. What, pray tell, happened on those pages to compel you or someone else to take such action? Wahkeenah 05:48, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

There's never been an article on "God's country". It's always been the battleground of a silly edit war with anonymous users continuing to redirect it to articles such as Australia, Eastern Suburbs, Sutherland Shire, and even Fascism and has been deleted about 5 times already. If you think you can write a neutral and sourced article about the phrase, please send me a draft and I'll unlock it for you. Thanks. --  Netsnipe  ►  07:01, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

God's country?

Thanks for the note, and for reformatting my talk page. :) No, it's not worth reviving and risking an edit war just to expand on a beer commercial. I was just curious if there was anything about it, as it's apparently a frequently-used phrase. Everyone thinks his homeland is "God's country", I suppose... along with the ironic use, such as Groucho Marx in Animal Crackers (1930 or so), as "Captain Spaulding, the African Explorer", telling his audience, "Africa is God's country... and He can have it!" No, let's leave this one alone. :) Wahkeenah 12:27, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

User:Jaydjenkins

Thanks for the heads-up. You don't find the editing patterns to be a bit, um, disturbing? Users who show up out of the blue and become heavy participants in a contentious AfD, showing good knowledge of Misplaced Pages guidelines (like notability), scream "shenanigans" to me, at least. (I'm not disputing the unblock; I'm a new admin and am looking for feedback.) | Mr. Darcy talk 15:04, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

There's a difference between single purpose account and sock puppets. You only block the latter if CheckUser proves it or they're being obviously disruptive. Don't forget that friends do ask their friends to help stack votes on Misplaced Pages, but sometimes those friends editing Misplaced Pages for the first time stay. If I were you, I wouldn't block any AFD sockpuppets on suspicion alone if they're not vandalising etc. Just use the {{Not a ballot}} and {{spa}} and the closing admin will ignore them. It's just not the risk biting potential newcomers. As for the AFD you're handling, you can blame that on the Gay Nigger Association of America trolls and their war on blogs -- just treat them as white noise. --  Netsnipe  ►  15:15, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
OK, good to know. The other two accounts I blocked were clearly SPAs (and in hindsight, I should have identified them as such), so I'm comfortable with those. Thanks again. | Mr. Darcy talk 15:18, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

IP blocks.

Gotcha. I've restored the block at one week, leaving account creation open as well. The indef was inadvertent; I thought I had set it to a finite duration but obviously selected the wrong item in the pull-down menu. | Mr. Darcy talk 18:00, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

PS, if you think a shorter block is in order, go ahead. I was just looking for something long enough to discourage the editor in question from continuing his assault on Embraer-related articles. | Mr. Darcy talk 18:02, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

There was no point reblocking 89.241.144.42 (talkcontribsWHOISRDNSRBLsblock userblock log) at all. If you hadn't noticed from the edits to your talk page, he/she had already forced an IP change to 89.241.213.80 (talkcontribsWHOISRDNSRBLsblock userblock log). In these situations, semi-protection is much more useful than blocks. --  Netsnipe  ►  18:12, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Semi-protecting a half-dozen or more pages seemed like a bad idea to me; why deny other editors the chance to make legitimate edits? If the user in question starts his shenanigans again from the new IP address, I would temporarily block that one as well (would a few hours be more appropriate?) - but so far, s/he hasn't done so, but has been quite reasonable in discussing the matter. You can just respond here, BTW - no need to repost on my talk page. | Mr. Darcy talk 18:23, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

You've got a equally good point as well.I was thinking you might have resorted to a range block instead. If the user persists, bring it up at Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents. --  Netsnipe  ►  18:28, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Admin help.

OK, I think I need to undo a bad page move (Czechoslovakia -> Republic of Czechoslovakia). There have been a few edits since then, but it will be easy to re-create them after the undo. What's the best procedure? Rollback the current article (RoC) then move it? I want to make sure I preserve page histories etc. Complicating it is that Czechoslovakia is now a dab page with its own small history. Thanks. | Mr. Darcy talk 23:30, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Based on the tickings off and super-fast reverts I encountered from the editors of the dab page, I think it's fair to assume that they want the old state of affairs back. Most of the post-30 November edit history looks eminently discardable. I'd suggest just zapping Czechoslovakia, reverting the move, and rolling back the edits to the pre-move state. According me, the last pre-move versions are:
But you might want to double-check that. Apologies for stating the bloody obvious (like Sybil Fawlty, I could compete in the Olympics at that). If Domino theory (talk contribs) is unhappy, perhaps xe won't do this sort of thing again. Angus McLellan (Talk) 01:15, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

why has my page on wikipedia been deleted? (MaltaProducts.com)

a lot of companies have a history and ours is a website that promotes local culture. If the wording was not properly said, then I can reword.

Then how come other companies like these exist:

What is the difference between these companies and our website?

Hi Kangroo Man

You have been assisting some anti-Turkish vandals with your unwelcome support concerning user page User talk:160.79.139.10. Can you explain to the media why you allow Khoikhoi's deletion of legitimate entries in the pertinent user talk page as well as guiding us whom to approach to put a cap on your nonsense there and some other blocking activity on good-faith edits? Thank you. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 81.131.101.50 (talk) 19:01, 10 December 2006 (UTC). Oh, before I forget. Please post your reply here before or after you attempt to block this user to cover up. Thanks.

You seem to be confusing me with someone else. Please provide specific diffs to support your allegations and I shall respond to your queries. I also do not appreciate being interrogated by an anonymous IP, so if you would disclose your identity or at least create an account, I will be more willing to some assume good faith regarding your questions rather than dismiss you as an agent provocateur. --  Netsnipe  ►  19:09, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

It appears that you upheld arbitrarily these blocks in the past without being able to provide any link to any offending other users. Also, what is the meaning and true purpose of your labeling IP addresses? Do you even know what Template:SharedIP is? Read it. I have not provided any support to Khoikhoi (talk contribs) in whatever nationalistic dispute you are involved in and up until now have not removed text from User talk:160.79.139.10 except now because as 81.131.101.50 you have no right to be editing any talk page apart from someone you are in direct contact with. As for tagging IP addresses, it's standard procedure to identify schools and proxy servers because multiple people edit from the same IP address. Look through my Special:Contributions/Netsnipe and you'll see I tag dozens of talk pages of school IPs every day. You seem to have no idea how Misplaced Pages:Autoblock works, nor what is involved in working unblock-en-l. And you're paranoid if you think I'm anti-Turkish. I'm on the other side of the world and I don't fucking care -- I deny unblocking to anyone who violates Misplaced Pages:Sock puppetry as 172GAL (talk contribs) has on many occasions. Its simple -- if someone can't follow the correct policies and procedures of Misplaced Pages like everyone else can, then they're no longer welcome here regardless of their sex, race, nationality, religion or creed. --  Netsnipe  ►  19:30, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

You are full of shit, must be your affinity to your kangroos at your back yard. Who are you referring as sockpuppets and what was your evidence other than your above portrayed vulgarity and vandal attitute?81.131.101.50 19:36, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Look, if you were upfront about which unblock requests I've declined that make you so disgruntled, then maybe I could explain myself properly, but all you're doing is being hypocritical by violating Misplaced Pages:No personal attacks by calling me "full of shit" and attacking my nationality. I would appreciate it if you weren't so cowardly as to continue attacking me as an anonymous IP. At least I am extending the courtesy of hearing you out and not blocking you immediately. The very least you can do in return is stop hiding, log in and file a complaint at the proper channels such as Misplaced Pages:Requests for comment or Misplaced Pages:Requests for arbitration. --  Netsnipe  ►  19:44, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

I just got curious about your sockpuppet comments and studied your behaviour for curiosity. Your log shows the following involvement. It appears that you sustained Bertil Videt's denial of his own entries (means lying in your polite down under language), his mutilation of his entries from the other talk page, as well as covering up khoikhoi's assistance. All other irelevent comentary by you only reflects on you and those you are assisting.

  6. (cur) (last) 18:13, 15 November 2006 M4URIZ (Talk | contribs) (no sockpuppet activity here, requests unblock and address to 3RR violation at Ataturk page.)

Thanks again for helping me prove my points further. (By the way, study Khoikhoi's last few days block history. The fool now thinks that everyone endorsing an edit to tease him is 172GAL, enjoying his trigger happiness. He is the anti-Turk, not you (you fit to another category) Take care. 81.131.101.50 19:56, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

You're sadly mistakened. Check the histories of Bertilvidet's userpages. I've never talked to that user before let alone edited any common articles -- I don't know him at all. Take a look at my editing history -- I spend my time reviewing unblock requests and lifting autoblocks. Autoblocks occur when an user is automatically blocked because he/she shares the same IP address as another blocked user. It's my job to assess whether an IP is shared or not by running WHOIS and Reverse DNS lookup lookups among other things. Here's the WHOIS and RDNS for 160.79.139.10 which tells me it belongs to a teaching hospital...so I tag the IP address as such so when one student vandalises Misplaced Pages and gets blocked, the vandal doesn't end up getting the whole school blocked. Can't you see that I'm not involved in whatever crazy conspiracy you've imagined me being part of? Does any of this make sense to you? --  Netsnipe  ►  20:09, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

I think you exactly know what I am referring to in my above list of references with your blocking and sustaining activity against M4URIZ as just one example (dont have time for more now). You made your paranoid comments about your misinterpretations on who might be that 172GAL. Thats for your pseudopsychologist hobby side. 81.131.101.50 20:20, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Personal attacks

Personal attacks have no place on Misplaced Pages, and you will get blocked in short order if you persist with them. Rich Farmbrough, 20:13 10 December 2006 (GMT).

I believe you are referring to NetSnipe's remarks of 'fucking' and 'you are paranoid', right?

There's no point blocking. This user is trolling from a British Telecom dialup address (dial81-131-101-50.in-addr.btopenworld.com). He/she will just disconnect and reconnect to get another IP address if blocked. The only thing I can do if I get sick of the harassment to contact BT's abuse department myself and have their ISP contract terminated. -- Netsnipe ► 20:19, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Harrasment? What are your referring to? The whole world is already reading this.
