Adolescence is the transitional stage of development from child to adult. That time involves changes in body, psychology and career. In the onset of adolescence, children usually complete elementary school and enter secondary education, such as middle school or high school. Maturity in body also leads to an interest in sexual activities, even though they may not be emotionally mature enough or financially able to support children. For these reasons, teenage pregnancy is usually considered problematical. Given the emotional immaturity of adolescents, many countries consider those under a certain age to be too young to engage in sexual intercourse, even if they are physiologically capable, and even too young for other sexual activities, see age of consent. At this age there is also a greater probability of drug abuse and alcohol abuse, or mental problems such as schizophrenia, eating disorders and depression. The emotional instability among some adolescents also sometimes causes youth crime.

Because of theior mature body, they become to have more chances to be target of being victims in sexual industry. Adolescents have often become seen as target of sexual interest as they mature. It can be seen even in some literatures such as lolita. Social consensus is mostly that pornography involving those under certain age, typically 18 (child pornography) is unaccpetable because they are still children, thus, it is prohibited strictly in most of countries. Participants of prostitution tour often prefer adolescent prostitutions because they tend to be more likely virgin. In the past and still in poor countries, often female adolescents are forced to engaged in prostitution, even if some are too young such as 12 and immature in body. This issue at whole is called (I don't remeber).

During this period of life, most children go through the stages of puberty, although it often begins before a person has entered the teens. Most cultures regard people to have become adults at various ages of the teenage years.

The word preteen describes a child a bit younger than a teenager: perhaps between the ages of about 8 and 12. The neologism tween has the same meaning. This word comes from the age being between that of a child and a teenager.

Preteens are increasingly a specifically targeted market segment by business, because they tend to maintain the preferences they develop at this age.

Puberty, occuring during adolescence, is the stage in the human lifespan when a child begins to develop adult secondary sex characteristics as their hormone balance shifts towards an adult state. Briefly, this is caused by the hypothalamus gland that secretes hormones into the blood stream which trigger growth in the gonads: the girl's ovaries and the boy's testicles.

In women, the first menstrual period is called menarche.

A teenager or teen is a person whose age is a number ending in "-teen" in the English language: that is to say, someone from the age of thirteen to the age of nineteen. The word is of recent origin, only having appeared in the mid 20th century. In Western culture, a distinct teenage culture has developed. This culture is often considered inferior to the mainstream culture, or in rebellion against it, and is thus often referred to as a subculture or counterculture.

In Japan, the term jyoshikousei (meaning female high school students) has become widely used for those in the ages from 16 to 18. They are often noted for their obsession with clothes, pop culture and mobile phones. They are often the target of sexual fantasy and ridicule of their obsessions. Prostitution by them is called enjyo kousai in Japan.

At this age, role models such as sports players and rock stars are popular, and adolescents often express a desire to be like their chosen role model. For this reason, people who are considered role models are often heavily criticised for their behaviour, because of the perceived danger of adolescents copying them.

In commerce, this generation is seen as an important target. Cellular phones, contemporary popular music, video games and clothes are popular amongst adolescents.

In the past (and still in some cultures) there were celemonies that celebrate adulthood, typically occuring during adolescence. Genpuku in Japan was a celebration that showed a samurai was considered to be an adult. The age of genpuku varied roughly from 12 to 18. They usually changed their name from their birth name to an adult name and were started to be treated as an adult, for example, by separation from their mother or nanny. Some were given a territory to protect. No samurai was allowed to marry before genpuku. Females did not have genpuku or any equivalent ceremony.

In many countries, those over the age of 18 are legally considered responsible adults. Japan's celebration of this in January is called the coming of age (see Japanese calendar). Those who are under the age of legal responsibility may be considered too young to be held accountable for criminal action. This is called the defense of infancy. The right to vote in elections is given between the ages of 16 and 21 in many countries.
