He went on to earn his M.A. at Eastern New Mexico University in 1965. He became head coach of the Kansas State University Wildcats in 1989 where he has coached up through the present 2004 season.
He was named to the Board of Trustees of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) in 2003. Recognized as the National Coach of the Year by the Associated Press, the Walter Camp Football Foundation, and was awarded the Bear Bryant Award and the Bobby Dodd Foundation Award as the coach of the year in 1998. Coach Snyder has been selected by the Associated Press as the Big Eight Coach of the Year three times (1990, '91 and '93), joining Bob Devaney as the only two men in Big Eight history to be named Coach of the Year three times in a four-year period.
After 15 years at K-State Snyder has a total record of 127-55-1 to become the all-time winningest Wildcat football coach. He has led Kansas State to eleven consecutive bowl games.
