Mama Said is a Metallica song on the band's sixth album, Load. The lyrics, written by James Hetfield, supposedly represent a man or boy who is learning to find his own way in life away from his mother. The song is almost directly written about James' difficult relationship with his mother, who died of cancer. This is evidenced in the line "I took your love for granted" (and now that she passed away it is gone), and "A cold stone is all I see" (all that is left is a gravestone). Hetfield performed this song live on one or possibly more than one occasion on his own, using a single steel-stringed acoustic guitar and no drums or bass. A video for one live-performance of this song can be seen on YouTube here
