Herrera, a Republican, ran for the U.S. House to represent Texas's 23rd congressional district in 2024, citing a frustration in incumbent Tony Gonzales votes and gun policy. After bringing Gonzales to a runoff in a packed primary, Herrera lost by only 400 votes while winning the majority of counties.

Later that year, Herrera was pushed by fans to be nominated for Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) under president-elect Donald Trump.
