Discussion around Khalifa's controversial 2023 Gaza-Israel War tweets

There seems to be some confusion and disagreement over whether or not the article should refer to Khalifa's tweets as having been "supportive of Hamas". The article should refer to this, as Khalifa's tweets were made in response to a Hamas operation to infiltrate Israeli territory, hence the "freedom fighters" who were filming the event, which she referred to, were Hamas fighters. The only question is whether or not her tweets were supportive of the violence that took place, by Hamas operatives against Israeli civilian border communities. At the time of her tweets, it was already being reported that there were Hamas gunmen who had infiltrated communities, as well as active hostage situations. The debatable nature is hence not over whether or not Khalifa supported Hamas (her support for Hamas is a fact, as her tweets were directly supportive of a Hamas operation to infiltrate Israel), but rather whether or not she supported the mass murder components of that Hamas operation. Neutral Editor 645 (talk) 13:07, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

I reverted your edit here under WP:CLAIM. Interpretation of her comments is subjective opinion. As you noted, there is disagreement over this, and you must gain consensus to reinstate your version. Morbidthoughts (talk) 13:54, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
It is not contentious - she tweeted support for Hamas fighters who were infiltrating Israel, during a Hamas operation against Israel. It is logical fact. Please point out the disagreement around this. Neutral Editor 645 (talk) 14:37, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
Update: for now, I have changed 'supportive of Hamas' to 'supportive of "freedom fighters"', which purely uses her own wording from the tweet and does not induce any external interpretation. It is however important that the specific context of her tweet, which generated the significant controversy, remains clearly but briefly specified in the article. Her response to the controversy of course must remain too. Neutral Editor 645 (talk) 15:04, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
I also realised that your edits are subject to WP:PIA, and you should not be making these edits given your tenure. Morbidthoughts (talk) 16:52, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
I aimed to merely outline a significant controversy involving a celebrity figure, and I believe that my contributions are in good faith. I shall refrain from further edits on the topic, for now, given this, and feel free to submit them on my behalf, if you agree with them. Neutral Editor 645 (talk) 17:04, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
It is contentious due to the noted disagreement. I'll let others weigh in on this, but you have not obtained consensus nor addressed the use of the non-neutral word WP:CLAIM. Morbidthoughts (talk) 16:41, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for this resource. I think it is fair to let others weigh in on the wider topic - open to what the community thinks. Neutral Editor 645 (talk) 16:59, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
This came to my attention from WP:BLPN. I agree that these edits were not improvements. Feelings are high about the war right now, but WP:RECENTISM is something to avoid. And Controversy sections (not the same as sections about a particular controversial incident) are preferable to avoid in biographies. Russ Woodroofe (talk) 09:08, 23 October 2023 (UTC)

Nationality \ Citizenship

TheDoodbly edited the page in early October to list Mia as not a US national when by law a US citizen is a US national. The previous info box description was accurate, the current is not. I do not see any discussion, TheDoodbly just made the change. The change should be reverted. 2600:1700:1B00:15FF:6D45:EFE1:3810:393C (talk) 21:43, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

Which edit because it is not obvious to me? @TheDoodbly:. Further, I don't see any citations establishing that she is an American citizen? Morbidthoughts (talk) 22:15, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
10 October 2023‎ TheDoodbly
I'm confused by your response about citation of citizenship. The Misplaced Pages article says she's an American. Are you suggesting the article should be updated to state she's a Lebanese media personality? 2600:1700:1B00:15FF:6D45:EFE1:3810:393C (talk) 23:11, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
There needs to be sources that confirm that she is an American citizen. Morbidthoughts (talk) 23:42, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
For the correction of the article that was vandalized by TheDoodbly? He's the one that added Citizenship: American. 2600:1700:1B00:15FF:6D45:EFE1:3810:393C (talk) 23:54, 11 November 2023 (UTC)

I wanted to clarify the meaning behind Mia Khalifa's new Jewelry line "Sheytan", It is a romanized spelling of the Arabic word "شيطان", which its literal translation to English means "Devil/Demon" 41.78.17.212 (talk) 16:58, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

Month and date of birth

Hey so I was going to add what month and day she was born on but her Misplaced Pages is locked, is someone sees it, she was born (BLP violation removed), or when editing it |birth_date = (BLP violation removed)

I would appreciate if someone added her official date of birth on her Misplaced Pages please and thank you. MadBlade 2 (talk) 18:15, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages includes dates of birth that have been widely published by reliable sources. If the person is borderline notable, we err on the side of caution and simply list the year, provided that there is a reliable source for it; see WP:BLPPRIVACY. Is there a published source for this info? —Sangdeboeuf (talk) 03:13, 13 December 2023 (UTC)

Real name

Her real birth name is (BLP violation removed), “Mia Khalifa” is her stage name. I propose that her real name be specified here on Misplaced Pages, and her date of birth is (BLP violation removed). Californipedia (talk) 23:16, 24 October 2023 (UTC)

Per WP:BLPPRIVACY, Misplaced Pages includes names that have been widely published by reliable sources. Citing just the Hindustan Times fails here and also seems pretty random since Khalifa is American, not Indian. —Sangdeboeuf (talk) 02:53, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

In a 2023 video interview posted on YouTube, Khalifa states that she goes by a different name. I won't mention the name here in case doing so is a BLP violation, but if you watch this video, she clearly states her current name, which may in fact be her birth name. Birthday again

Responding to @Sangdeboeuf's revert and user talk message: Pretty sure my edit complies with WP:BLPPRIVACY (WP:DOB) in spirit and letter but will welcome other opinions. Her Instagram post of 2019-02-10 says: Moment of gratitude for everyone who has wished me a happy birthday today, and for every beautiful blessing that has come my way this year. Last year on my birthday I proclaimed "25 is the year of being fat and happy," and I ate and laughed my way through every day of it with that in mind. 26 started off just the same. Policy says: A verified social media account of an article subject saying about themselves something along the lines of "today is my 50th birthday" may fall under self-published sources for purposes of reporting a full date of birth. It may be usable if there is no reason to doubt it. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 23:04, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

This rather circuitous message stretches the limits of that policy IMO. The subject does not actually come out and say, "Today is my birthday", let alone "I was born on ". —Sangdeboeuf (talk) 23:11, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
I don't think it's meant to be cryptic ... The previous year, on the day after 2018-02-10, she wrote: Long fall from grace.... this is what a post 25th birthday hangover looks like. She's identified her birthday other times: on 2016-02-10 (It's my birthday), 2017-02-10 (#BirthdaySweatSesh), and 2023-02-10 (Happy happy birthday Mia!!!). But even without that context, the post of 2019-02-10 seems complete enough not to violate WP:NOR. It says something along the lines of today is my 26th birthday. I'll post to WP:BLPN to get more eyes. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 01:41, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
Something along the lines of "today is my birthday" would be a different grammatical construction with the same meaning like "It's my birthday today" or "I'm years old today", not a message thanking other people for simply wishing someone a happy birthday followed by an indirect allusion to a number of years a couple sentences later. Whether it's meant to be cryptic or not, we have to make several inferences to extract the date of birth from the actual content of the message, which is WP:OR. —Sangdeboeuf (talk) 16:44, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
Another solid source: Maxim says she turns 24 today on 2017-02-10; she says thanks on Twitter. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 02:01, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
I believe that these sources taken together are adequate to verify her date of birth per WP:ABOUTSELF. Cullen328 (talk) 02:07, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
I disagree regarding ABOUTSELF. What we're interested in is Khalifa's age (which we already have via CNN), and/or date of birth including the year. The birthday alone is simple trivia, and original research must not be used to extrapolate the date of birth given the birthday & birth year per WP:DOB. Moment of gratitude for everyone who has wished me a happy birthday today doesn't explicitly say what her age is or even what her birthday actually is, and post 25th birthday hangover doesn't pin the birthday to a single day either. The intent of these posts is evidently to build a parasocial relationship with Khalifa's fans, not to document the facts of Khalifa's life for posterity. IMO the best source here is Maxim, which sure isn't saying much, but at least it's an actual date from a recognized publication. —Sangdeboeuf (talk) 16:54, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
Agree with Sangdeboeuf. Adding a WP:DOB should not require puzzling vague-ish sources together, birthdates are not gold to be mined. ABOUTSELF sources are fine, but they need to be solid on the date. Maxim may be ok-ish in context, but that's not glaringly obvious. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:10, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång
I believe the following can be used for the year (1993) over Maxim, since WP:CALC allows us to do routine calculations with birthdays and all are from reliable sources as far as I know.

Correction of former employer's name, and additional context.

  • What you think should be changed:
She also received admonition from the owner of drug company Red Light Holland, Josh Shaprio, who told her in a tweet to "consider fired."+She also received admonition from Todd Shapiro, CEO of ] company Red Light Holland, who is Jewish, telling her on ] to "Consider yourself fired effective immediately."; Khalifa was working for Red Light Holland as a Consultant and received no compensation for her time there.
  • Why it should be changed:

The name is entirely incorrect. The additional context of Shapiro being Jewish is relevant, as he would obviously have strong feelings on the Israel-Palestine conflict, about which Khalifa's comments were made.

  • References supporting the possible change (format using the "cite" button):

"Red Light Holland Fires Mia Khalifa for Her Appalling Tweets and Comments Condoning Hamas Terrorist Attacks in Israel". Newsfile. Newsfile Corp. 10 October 2023.

100.16.5.2 (talk) 18:34, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

Not done: Newsfile Corp. appears to be a hosting service for press releases, which are primary sources. The source of the post is listed as Red Light Holland Corp., making this a virtually self-published source. It's unclear why we should care whether some random person has strong feelings on the Israel-Palestine conflict or any other issue. —Sangdeboeuf (talk) 14:25, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
I would argue that stating that a former employer said that, without explaining why, leads to an inaccurate representation of the severity of her fairly milquetoast comments, and the public reaction to them at the time, but I may be alone on that. Thanks for taking a look.
