ConvoWizard study details
Hi 2NumForIce,
This is Jonathan with the ConvoWizard study team. First off, thanks for indicating your interest in our study! We just wanted to give you a quick update that we're still waiting on more sign-ups, and will officially launch the study once we hit a "critical mass" of participants - once that happens we'll follow up with more details. In the meantime, please don't hesitate to reach out (via talk page, email, etc.) if you have any questions before we begin!
(And if you know anyone else who'd be potentially interested in ConvoWizard, please feel free to spread the word!)
-- Jonathan at CornellNLP (talk) 19:19, 23 June 2023 (UTC)
- Hello again! Just wanted to leave a quick update that the study is now live. If you are still interested in participating, you can begin by filling out the following form, which also contains more detailed instructions: https://cornell.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_dm4TiyTZkTfIICO (note that the first page does ask again for the same information as the initial interest form you filled out, but subsequent pages of the form contain more new questions/information). Thanks again for your interest, and please let us know if you have any questions or comments! Jonathan at CornellNLP (talk) 19:20, 3 July 2023 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The Section-level Image Suggestions feature has been deployed on seven Wikipedias (Portuguese, Russian, Indonesian, Catalan, Hungarian, Finnish and Norwegian Bokmål). The feature recommends images for articles on contributors' watchlists that are a good match for individual sections of those articles.
- Global abuse filters have been enabled on all Wikimedia projects, except English and Japanese Wikipedias (who opted out). This change was made following a global request for comments.
- Special:BlockedExternalDomains is a new tool for administrators to help fight spam. It provides a clearer interface for blocking plain domains (and their subdomains), is more easily searchable, and is faster for the software to process for each edit on the wiki. It does not support regex (for complex cases), nor URL path-matching, nor the MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist, but otherwise it replaces most of the functionalities of the existing MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. There is a Python script to help migrate all simple domains into this tool, and more feature details, within the tool's documentation. It is available at all wikis except for Meta-wiki, Commons, and Wikidata.
- The WikiEditor extension was updated. It includes some of the most frequently used features of wikitext editing. In the past, many of its messages could only be translated by administrators, but now all regular translators on translatewiki can translate them. Please check the state of WikiEditor localization into your language, and if the "Completion" for your language shows anything less than 100%, please complete the translation. See a more detailed explanation.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 July. It will be on non-Misplaced Pages wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 July. It will be on all wikis from 13 July (calendar).
- The default protocol of Special:LinkSearch and API counterparts has changed from http to both http and https.
- Special:LinkSearch and its API counterparts will now search for all of the URL provided in the query. It used to be only the first 60 characters. This feature was requested fifteen years ago.
Future changes
- There is an experiment with a ChatGPT plugin. This is to show users where the information is coming from when they read information from Misplaced Pages. It has been tested by Wikimedia Foundation staff and other Wikimedians. Soon all ChatGPT plugin users can use the Misplaced Pages plugin. This is the same plugin which was mentioned in Tech News 2023/20.
- There is an ongoing discussion on a proposed Third-party resources policy. The proposal will impact the use of third-party resources in gadgets and userscripts. Based on the ideas received so far, policy includes some of the risks related to user scripts and gadgets loading third-party resources, some best practices and exemption requirements such as code transparency and inspectability. Your feedback and suggestions are warmly welcome until July 17, 2023 on on the policy talk page.

- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 July. It will be on non-Misplaced Pages wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 July. It will be on all wikis from 20 July (calendar).
- MediaWiki system messages will now look for available local fallbacks, instead of always using the default fallback defined by software. This means wikis no longer need to override each language on the fallback chain separately. For example, English Misplaced Pages doesn't have to create
en-ca
anden-gb
subpages with a transclusion of the base pages anymore. This makes it easier to maintain local overrides. - The
action=growthsetmentorstatus
API will be deprecated with the new MediaWiki version. Bots or scripts calling that API should use theaction=growthmanagementorlist
API now.

Hi 2NumForIce, when patrolling biographical edits, please keep in mind that restoring material others have objected to in good faith may be prohibited without obtaining a consensus first, and that repeating gossip or self-published sources' statements is problematic. In the moment you restore material on Misplaced Pages, you are legally responsible for it.
You have recently edited a page related to articles about living or recently deceased people, and edits relating to the subject (living or recently deceased) of such biographical articles, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially-designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Misplaced Pages’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Misplaced Pages administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Misplaced Pages;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system.
Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.
Best regards,

How to submit a complaint about a person undoing my edits
Hello Mentor
I am having a problem with a person undoing my edits, which are properly referenced. This person has undone my edits a few times with vague reasons. For example, the last reason was "A book literally titled "Croatia in the torture chamber" is not an indication of WP:RS"
Since when does a title of a book determine the legitimacy of the content, especially when the book is by a legitimate historian. The historian being: https://en.wikipedia.org/Rudolf_Horvat
The edits that this person makes spins the article into a biased direction, yet since he has seniority, he can bully me any way that he wants. ZidarZ (talk) 21:57, 2 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @ZidarZ,
- Apparently, the user mainly edits Holocaust- and torture-related articles, and apparently has reverted it due to it being not a reliable source. You might want to first read the page, and discuss it with the user. If nothing works, I suggest you go to the reliable sources noticeboard and editors there will be able to determine if a source is reliable.
- The next time you want to ask a question, you can use your homepage:
- Click on your username at the top
- If you see your user page, enable your homepage:
- Preferences → User profile → Display newcomer homepage
- Preferences → User profile → Default to newcomer homepage from username link in personal tools
- If you see your user page, enable your homepage:
- Under "Your mentor", click Ask your mentor a question
- Ask away! ~~2NumForIce (|edits) 02:17, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- 2NumForIce I notice you put a notice on this article. However, while I appreciate your contribution it is not necessary to cite the article's lead if the content is cited elsewhere in the article. The article was rated good after a review because all the content in the lead is appropriately cited in the body. (t · c) buidhe 06:00, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for your help - for being understanding and kind, unlike others.
- I read the "reliable sources" page and skimmed through the "reliable sources noticeboard" page. I can see that while there are criteria for judging a, there is much subjectivity in the discussions.
- According to the criteria of "reliable sources", the book that I referenced, titled "Hrvatska na mučilištu", qualifies as a reliable source but user "buidhe" deemed it not reliable based solely on its title. He said "...books with hyperbolic titles are less likely to be WP:RS and suitable to cite for wikipedia purposes.
- Who decides what a "hyperbolic title" is?
- My original translation of the title was "Croatia in the torture chamber" but a technically more precise title being "Croatia in a place of agony/suffering", originally published in 1942 and republished by a prominent Croatian publisher in 1992. The book details the suffering that Croatia endured during the first Yugoslavia - that being between 1918 and 1942. It is a reasonable title for the events of the time. The author Rudolf Horvat was a legitimate historian whose only apparent "faults" were that he suported an independent Croatian state and he opposed communism and Yugoslav dictator Tito.
- Is it proper for a person that does not read the Croatian language to judge the reliability of a Croatian book based solely on its title?
- About me
- I am a Croat, living in Canada, and have some knowledge of Croatian history. As an example of what I have done so far - my major update to the page of a little known Croat from the 16th century named "Janos Statileo". My desire is to present information about the accomplishments of Croats and to undo at least a tiny bit of anti-Croat propaganda (character assassination) created by the communist Yugoslav government. Sadly, there is still much anti-Croat hate based on Yugoslav lies.
- Here is my rule of thumb on how I plan to contribute. Since I am not a subject matter expert in Hungarian history I will never go onto a Hungarian history page and tell people how to present Hungarian history except where it misrepresents Croatian events - for example when a Hungarian tries to claim a historical person as one of their own. Rather than make an edit and provide a curt and glib reason for it, I prefer to address the issue in the talk section.
- Once again, thank you for your time and kindness. ZidarZ (talk) 11:25, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- The purpose of wikipedia is not to promote Croatia and crusade against "anti-Croatian" narratives. We're only interested in covering what reliable sources have to say on a subject. If that is your attitude I don't think you are going to stick around very long. (t · c) buidhe 14:18, 3 September 2023 (UTC)
- The purpose of Misplaced Pages is sharing information/knowledge.
- My desire is to ensure an honest/truthful presentation of information about Croatia. I have no problem with the use of RELIABLE (truthful) information and in fact I highly desire it. My problem is when people "cherry-pick" what they consider reliable information.
- The more I see you write - the more I come to feel that you hate Croats and by creating a negative image by cherry-picking facts.
- Re: "I don't think you are going to stick around very long."
- It is interesting to notice that first you make personal/character attacks and now you have moved to personal threats. Typically people see others as they are themselves. A propagandist sees everyone else as a propagandist.
- How I wish that you would leave me alone.
- But you now have a target and you seem like you will continue in your attacks and will probably even try to sabotage me.
- I have done nothing to you.

Help with Philosophical pessimism and Antinatalism#Asymmetry between good and bad things
Hello there! I see you've been quite active in some things related to the above mentioned pages. I'm pinging you @2NumForIce: directly to ask for some help. I've started 3 initiatives for these pages. If you could spare some time in the near future, could you please take a look at the proposal and voice your opinion? Of course, if you have interest, time, and energy to participate that would be amazing!
Here are the projects:
1. Talk:Philosophical_pessimism#A proposal for an overhaul of the article — this initiative is already in progress. The idea is to raise the quality of the page by switching it from a mere historical account to a more encyclopedic format.
2. Talk:Philosophical_pessimism#A proposal to split the History into a dedicated page — related to the one above. The historical account is overly detailed. It would be much better to have a dedicated page for the history of philosophical pessimism and leave only a brief history in the main page.
3. Talk:Antinatalism#A proposal to create a dedicated page for Benatar's axiological asymmetry — here, the idea is to extract the axiological asymmetry argument into a dedicated page. This way, a more detailed presentation could be given. In addition, we could expand on the various responses others philosophers made and counters from Benatar. Other pages could have a brief description and link to the details page.
I hope at least some of this will spark your interest! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fantastiera (talk • contribs) 14:12, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- ORES, the revision evaluation service, is now using a new open-source infrastructure on all wikis except for English Misplaced Pages and Wikidata. These two will follow this week. If you notice any unusual results from the Recent Changes filters that are related to ORES (for example, "Contribution quality predictions" and "User intent predictions"), please report them.
- When you are logged in on one Wikimedia wiki and visit a different Wikimedia wiki, the system tries to log you in there automatically. This has been unreliable for a long time. You can now visit the login page to make the system try extra hard. If you feel that made logging in better or worse than it used to be, your feedback is appreciated.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 September. It will be on non-Misplaced Pages wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 September. It will be on all wikis from 14 September (calendar).
- The Technical Decision-Making Forum Retrospective team invites anyone involved in the technical field of Wikimedia projects to signup to and join one of their listening sessions on 13 September. Another date will be scheduled later. The goal is to improve the technical decision-making processes.
- As part of the changes for the Better diff handling of paragraph splits wishlist proposal, the inline switch widget in diff pages is being rolled out this week to all wikis. The inline switch will allow viewers to toggle between a unified inline or two-column diff wikitext format.
Future changes
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on 20 September. This is planned at 14:00 UTC. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks.
- The Enterprise API is launching a new feature called "breaking news". Currently in BETA, this attempts to identify likely "newsworthy" topics as they are currently being written about in any Misplaced Pages. Your help is requested to improve the accuracy of its detection model, especially on smaller language editions, by recommending templates or identifiable editing patterns. See more information at the documentation page on MediaWiki or the FAQ on Meta.

Сreate an existing page in English.
Hello.
Please tell me when I will have the opportunity to create an existing page in English in another language? I translated it and put it in my draft and I also have it in translations. But as far as I understand, there is no opportunity to place it with me (my account).. And also how to correctly make a link to the presence of the English version of the page?
Thanks for the answers.
With respect. Serg5151 (talk) 18:44, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Serg5151,
- It seems like you have already created a new page using the content translation tool. Unfortunately, only autoconfirmed users (registered for 4 days + 10 edits) can directly create an article or move it into article space. However, there is an Articles for creation process, which allows non-autoconfirmed users to create an article.
- Before submitting, I recommend asking for some help at the Teahouse and the AfC Help Desk. When you're ready, use the source editor and add
{{subst:submit}}
- at the top of the page. ~~2NumForIce (|edits) 23:24, 12 September 2023 (UTC) (edited 23:25, 12 September 2023 (UTC): fix pre tag)

- One more question.
- When trying to publish a translated article, the following message appears:
- Automatic edit filters have identified problematic content in your translation. Filter hit: Content Translation Edits.
- What to do? Serg5151 (talk) 12:45, 13 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Serg5151: Unfortunately, the translation tool is only available to extended-confirmed editors (30 days and 500 edits) on English Misplaced Pages (see message intended to be shown and WP:CXT. However, it seems you already have a draft created, so you might want to try

ting that. Question from Arthas The Wizurd (16:02, 18 September 2023)
Hello! I particularly enjoy just doing generic grammar and spelling editing work. Is there a particularly helpful way and place to go around doing that? --Arthas The Wizurd (talk) 16:02, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Arthas The Wizurd, and welcome!
- You can find articles to copyedit on many places, such as:
- Your homepage, where you asked your question
- Click "Easy/Medium/Hard edits", and from there, choose options (you can choose multiple.)
- Misplaced Pages:Task Center
- You will see more tagged pages, however they are less intuitive than your homepage.
- Guild of Copy Editors
- This is a WikiProject of copyeditors. You can find some information there.
- WPCleaner
- A tool for detecting problems with pages; however, you still need to fix them manually.
- Your homepage, where you asked your question
- Need more help? Use your Special:Homepage! ~~2NumForIce (|edits) 22:49, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

How do I publish my own articles --Mtati ovuyonke (talk) 17:44, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
- I have grouped the sections into one to make it more cleaner.
- Hi @Mtati ovuyonke! I'm not sure what you mean for the first one, but I will summarize the second one.
- Writing an article can be a very complicated task. For beginners, I recommend The Misplaced Pages Adventure, an interactive experience guiding you through Misplaced Pages's norms.
- Next, you can try improve actual articles. You can find articles that need improvement through your Homepage (the same place where you asked your question). There's even a help option for quick access to some of our rules.
- When you're ready, check out Help:Your first article. Make sure to read this carefully, as that process will create a draft that will be reviewed by others before publishing.
- If you need more help, reply here or go to Homepage to ask another question. Happy editing! ~~2NumForIce (|edits) 02:33, 13 October 2023 (UTC)
