Apostrophe Abuse

lol, Firsfron... This seems too trivial to edit war about, and I seem to be a minority on this one. Maybe someone can set me straight. There's a sentence in the article that reads Any system which is open with its environment can freely produce more energy than the operator has to input. I interpret this as: the environment belongs to the system, so it is posessive. It is my understanding that when speaking in the posessive context there should be an apostrophe. Example: "David's shoelace is untied" instead of "Davids shoelace is untied." The shoelace belongs to David. But this is speaking about a person's belonging. What of a belonging of an object? "My car's tire is flat" or "My cars tire is flat?" What about "I wrecked my car. Its tire is flat" or "I wrecked my car. It's tire is flat?" Which of these is correct? Please see The Matrix Series talk page to discuss. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Graveenib (talkcontribs) .

Gah! My eyes! Ze goggles do nothing!
Anyway, sorry if I butted in, but I was bored, noticed the question on your talk page (I had it watchlisted as I had just said howdy), and thought I'd chime in. I'll go back to my punctuation cell now... Ziggurat 02:56, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Lightning

Yeah, thanks for asking - we're all good - feel rather honoured, really, as we were 'chosen'. The conductors did the job but electricity was down for quite a while (the only one in the street!). The strike was extremely noisy and palpable, with the worst clap of thunder that I've ever heard, exactly synchronous (what must it have been like for Mary Anning? - Ballista 07:05, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks from Yanksox

Hey, Firsfron, thanks for supporting my RfA, which registered a tally of 104/4/7. Which means...

I am now an admin!!!

I was and still am very flattered by all the kind comments that I recieved, I will also take into account the comments about how I could improve. I guarantee I will try my best to further assist Misplaced Pages with the mop. Feel free to drop in and say hi or if you need anything. Again, thank you so much! Yanksox 04:05, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Edits recognition

Hi Not pointless at all - more like keeping your flock motivated! Thanks for noticing. I was about to send you a message saying thanks for spotting my two misprints of Theropod - well spotted (just testing! :-)) - I hope that's the last gremlin of my editing of dinos sorted. - Ballista 12:08, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Yep, all fixed thanx. At this moment, I'm busy, re-organising my image sub-pages, also correcting residual Velo-/Bambi- captions, image names etc. Coelophysis error has been uploaded to Commons - someone was a bit keen - obviously before I corrected the error - oh well - have to fix that, now! - Ballista 12:28, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
No probs - now sorted (However, wrong image pages still persist, of course). If I were to make a list of ones I'd like deleted, is that something you can now do, with your new tools? Imagination's a wonderful thing. Einstein said: "Imagination is more important than knowledge." - Ballista 12:49, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
OK, great, thanks. I'll prepare a list at some point (not yet) - as for Commons - hang it - we'll just leave them up there as 'alternate spellings' etc.! - Ballista 14:03, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
Therapods lurk in the most surprising places! I've found about a dozen more, in our project pages (of all places) and in Theropoda(!) and in various other dino articles. - Ballista 20:39, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

User: 81.79.40.148

You removed this user with reason that they have been blocked, but they have not. Could you explain, please? Thank you. Bignole 17:02, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

According to this, the vandal has been blocked. Is s/he still active?--Firsfron of Ronchester 17:07, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
Is there not usually a "block" template attached to either the User page or User talk page. That user has neither place with such a template. But, I always thought that when you were blocked you were notified of it. That is why I am assuming that they were not blocked. Bignole 17:30, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
Ok, Thanks. It wasn't there, so I assume that in some confusion that it wasn't done. Hopefully this user will learn and stop vandalizing user pages. Thanks for the help. Bignole 18:16, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Vandal

Hi, thanks for that. I'm keeping an eye on this one too, but they have a roaming IP so I doubt it's going to stop until they get bored. I'm really not concerned, they're just trolling for attention, and have been for quite a while now ( ). Just some bored kid, I 'spect. All the best, Ziggurat 23:23, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Hey EvocativeIntrigue!
Thanks for your friendly note on my page. I'm really happy to have become an admin, and my RfA was full of nice comments. I'd love to share some cake with you... unfortunately, I'm a terrible cook. Would a cookie suffice? --Firsfron of Ronchester 17:57, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

My RfA and your vote

Hi again Firsfron,
Thanks for participating in my RFA! Ultimately, no consensus was reached, but I still appreciate the fact that you showed up to add in your two cents. Also—I'd like to thank you for the words of encouragement after the RFA closed. I do hope your adminship goes well, I can see from your positive attitude that you have earned your adminship. You can feel free to talk to me about it or add some advice on my improvement page.

Sincerely, The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me)

Thanks Thanks for your welcoming message. A fellow dinosaurphile! Maybe we can collaborate on something (though I don't want to steal your thunder!) Cheers, mate!--Gazzster 07:30, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

U.S. presidential election, 1800

Hi there:

Could you please not “fix” the apostrophe abuse in this article? All of the changes you are making are to a block quote from a letter written by Thomas Jefferson. Since this is a quotation, it should be exactly as Jefferson wrote it. (We could add “” after errors in Jefferson's original but, given Jefferson's propensity for mispunctuating “its”, we'd have to add it every three words.) I've already reverted your change once, with a note to this effect in the edit summary, and you've gone back and made the change again without any acknowledgement of my stated concern.

Thanks,

DLJessup (talk) 13:29, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

I saw your patch to the United States presidential election, 1800 article to prevent AWB fixes. Thank you very much.
DLJessup (talk) 18:29, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Fan Films Quarterly comment

You changed a direct quote for gramatical errors. However, since the sentence is a quote, you should not change it. PLS accept and revert to the original version. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nobleverse (talkcontribs)

RYULONG ADMIN NOMINATION

Hi, My name is 'YourCousin'. I have been blocked by RYULONG and his admin buddies. I was VOTE 16 on the OPPOSE list and his #3 supporter(Mr Lefty) deleted my vote after 90seconds (look for yourself)... This guy is totally crooked and a real wiki-bully! I have been censored (LOOK AT THE NOMINATION HISTORY)and would appeal to you to PLEASE read my entry which they deleted... this was vote 15:

Strong oppose I am repasting this as it was just CROSSED OUT by RYULONG SUPPORTER #3, MrLefty. THIS IS A VALID VOTE AND ENTRY, PLEASE READ IT AND DON't JUST TRY TO SILENCE IT! This user(RYULONG) and I had a dispute about a controversial Jeremy Clarkson quote that involved INCEST. I deleted the passage noting that it was too controversial to remain with NO SOURCE. Ryulong insisted that it stayed claiming that 'HE PROBABLY SAID IT' and 'IT SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING' he would say. After a short editing war, I decided to start a TOPIC on the discussion page so that we could sort it out. RYULONG repeatedly deleted my topic more than 6 times until finally, he had an admin friend block my username for a week. I returned with a sockpuppet and attempted to open the discussion again only to have it constantly and repeatedly deleted.

Please look at RYULONG's discussion page history as well as the discussion page history at Jeremy Clarkson and I am confident that you will see that not only did he attempt to thwart my fair introduction of a topic onto the discussion page, but also tried to insist on keeping a Jeremy Clarkson quote on the page that tunred out to be TOTALLY INNACCURATE. He was stating that when you introduce a quote to an article, it is not the contributor's responsibility to CITE the SOURCE of the quote, but rather it is up to the editors to prove that the subject DID NOT SAY the quote.

I may have lost it and personally attacked this person even telling him to F.O., I may have used sockpuppets to have the page corrected (as it has been and is now)... But this is a bona fide crooked bully. Do not make this bully Admin please. Just look at the pages and you will see that everything I have said is true and the truth has NO holes. he is not concerned about the factuality of an article, he is more concerned about getting his way and having his input in it! He was very, very determined to have the INCEST remarks left INACCURATE and INTACT. The ACTUAL quote is now on the page and has a SOURCE. This is factual. --YourOtherCousin 17:00, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Dear Firsfron, thank you so much for your beautiful words, your kidness and your trust in me! My Request for Adminship is finally over, and the support and appreciation that the community has gifted me will stick in my mind as long as I live. I have no way to properly express how grateful I am to you for all you've done for me, and all I can tell you is, I'll try not to disappoint you nor anyone else with my use of the buttons... and if I mess up, make sure to come here and give me a good yell! :) Seriously, tho, if you ever need my help, either for admin-related stuff or in any other way, you'll always be welcome to message me, and I promise I'll try my very best.
Despite I've never had the pleasure of talking to you until now, dear Firsfron, I really think the best gift that my RfA has given me is to meet people like you, as I see that you're a great editor and an awesome person. Your kind words to our friend Spawn Man when he needed the most support from us are just an example of this. From this day on, I also consider you my friend, and I'd be happy and honored if you accept me as your own. With a big hug, your friend,

Dinosaur articles

Hi - now that you're an admin, I can bother you with this legitimately. How do we work out if there are any other dinos who do not have the word 'dinosaur' on their page? (just today found that Tuojiangosaurus was without). Finding those that do is easy enough, on AWB but finding those without ....? I suppose we could ask AWB for a list of dinos and compare that with the project's list? Bit laborious, though. - Ballista 17:20, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Looks good - thanks as ever - I may not be able to get to it for a couple of days but now I am 'equipped', it'll happen one day. - Ballista 17:40, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

"New User"

Hey Mets,

I've blocked "new user" for now, as the original account was supposed to be temporarily blocked; block evasion is itself a blockable. I saw your note on the user's talk page; please remember to keep a level head, and don't respond in kind to his taunts. Clearly, he's trying to goad you. Don't let him.

Happy editing and good luck with the RfA! :) --Firsfron of Ronchester 21:13, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the blocking of the "good luck". That was about as far as I was would go with the "sarcasm", I would never let it escalate, you have nothing to worry about :-) —Mets501 (talk) 21:16, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Once again...

...thanks for helping out! I'm really not popular with the trolls recently, huh? I posted a notice at WP:AIV, but I think you got to it before someone would have there (or you may have spotted it there first - I dunno :). In any case, cheers. Ziggurat 22:38, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

I think it was Fart (one of the frequently-vandalised pages on my watchlist) this time, although recently I've copped some flak for removing the Colbert-related vandalism at Bear too. Ziggurat 22:47, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
Well thank you very much! That's just made my day. Did you hear about the Colbert hullabaloo? It's in the Signpost this week, and while Elephant copped most of the damage there was a lot at Bear too. It's back on semi-protection for the time being, thank goodness. Ziggurat 22:59, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

GHe's RfA

Hi Firsfron!

Thank you for taking part in my RfA! Unfortunately, it ended with a final result of (62/23/7), and with only 73% support, no consensus was achieved. Nevertheless, I thank you for your support and I'll be looking for it in my next RfA! :)

Keeping track?

I don't know if you want to keep track of removed comments, so I'll just note that I removed some vandalism from a banned user from this page. Regards, Ziggurat 22:21, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

How does an undelete request work ??

There was a recent delete of an article Jayram Menon by an administrator User:Mailer diablo - the delete was abrupt in the midst of a discussion. The general consensus was non-verifiability. The original AfD was initiated by an administrator User:Btball - that was on an erroneous premise on the number of hits that was got through a Google search, which the admin User:Btball acknowleges in his discussion. User:0SIRIS however raised some valid observations on how the google search parameters. The dispute still remained on the verifiability. I have managed to get a scan image of a press/news item that was featured in a leading newspaper in India - Hindustan Times This does acknowledge the notability and verifiability of the person. The news was featured in the 2nd Aug 2005 and the news paper can be contacted for its verifiability. There are many more such news items which may be on print but may not be retrivable on google search. Verifyability for Jayram Menon. How does one get the admins to review the deletion and be fair till a consensus is reached ? AshleyMiller 08:14, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Misplaced Pages, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Misplaced Pages:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
The last AC meeting (full log)
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Misplaced Pages:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Misplaced Pages talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

With regard to User:CFIF, I will accept his insincere apology. I do hope that you, among others, will monitor his behaviour in future. I know I shall be watching him/her to see if he/she engages in such behaviour towards others. I would say that it is likely, given his track record of screaming "J'accuse" at the drop of a hat, as per his dealings with User:JianLi among others. However, I will stop engaging this troll as it my experience of dealing with such people is not to egg them on.23:01, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

This User continues to violate Misplaced Pages policy, over and over again. Now he is uploading copy-righted images. What is the issue with allowing him back on the site to edit? It creates more work for editors. --DavidShankBone 04:04, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

User:CFIF is at it again

User:CFIF is at it again with his unfounded accusations. Apparently, he seems to not directly contact users, but complains to administrators. I am amazed he has not done what seems to be his favoured tactic and has braned me a sockpuppet of a user who hasn't been active in a year. And now he wants to be an adminstrator? Surely his behaviour really needs to be looked into with a fine toothed comb, as he seems to be a problem user. Displaced Brit 03:36, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Well, the thing is, that list cannot be updated the way it used to be done, as the Toolserver stopped replicating the English Misplaced Pages's data sometime in June (and that's the reason Kate's Tool and Interiot's Tool3 don't work very well and give outdated data). Also, the best way to do it would be directly on the toolserver, instead of making repeated queries to the CGI interface of the toolserver tools, so perhaps asking Interiot about it would be best. However, you could try using Essjay's counter, but that relies on HTML scraping, which done on that scale could probably get that tool firewalled. Titoxd 07:59, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Oh, no problem. The toolserver's copy of the database was replayed from a database dump on June, then replication started again. However, it was soon found that having enwiki replicate to the toolserver caused the rest of the databases to start lagging, so it was halted until faster disks were installed on the server. I have no clue what has happened after that, but the one who may know is Interiot, so feel free to ask him what's going on in the toolserver. Titoxd 08:16, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Question...

...was there a reason for this revert? The articel (then) used "You" at least once out of quotation and the other changes were to change the flow of the prose. 68.39.174.238 11:57, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

It's fine, I didn't suspect there was a real problem with it, and I attempted to fix the issue mentioned in the template in a later edit. 68.39.174.238 22:58, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
