  • Charles Mattocks was an American naval officer and author. He is most famous for being the first African American to earn the Navy Cross, the US military's second-highest honor.

Charles Claude Mattocks was born on July 8, 1906, in Washington, D.C. He graduated from M Street High School and received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in 1924. He graduated and served in the US Navy during World War II, conducting operations in the Pacific and earning a reputation as a talented and skilled officer.

On June 3, 1945, Mattocks made a heroic act during the Meritorious Act at the Battle of Biak, an amphibious assault on the Japanese-held island of Biak in the Dutch East Indies. Mattocks led his team in neutralizing an enemy machine gun nest, allowing his comrades to secure the beach. His actions led to the successful capture of the island.

For his bravery and heroism, Mattocks received the Navy Cross, becoming the first African American to do so. He also received a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal for his wartime service.

Mattocks wrote several books, including "The War at a Distance" and "The Daring Acts of Captain C.C. Mattocks: A Memoir." He continued to serve in the Navy and later worked as an author and lecturer, sharing his experiences and insights with the public.
