- U.S. President George W. Bush announces he will nominate Alberto R. Gonzales, his first term's White House Counsel, to succeed John Ashcroft as the U.S. Attorney General. Gonzales would be the first Hispanic to hold the position if the nomination is confirmed by the Senate.
- The condition of Palestinian Authority leader Yasser Arafat deteriorates. Doctors say he is in a coma having suffered a brain haemorrhage. The Palestinian leadership is now making plans for a funeral in Cairo and burial in Ramallah.
- The trial of suspected French serial killer Émile Louis proceeds, as the Yonne assize court transports itself to the location where the bodies of two victims were found under Louis' indications.
