The 1940 Southwestern Louisiana Bulldogs football team was an American football team that represented the Southwestern Louisiana Institute of Liberal and Technical Learning (now known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) in the Louisiana Intercollegiate Conference during the 1940 college football season. In their fourth year under head coach Johnny Cain, the team compiled a 6–3–1 record.

Southwestern Louisiana was ranked at No. 293 (out of 697 college football teams) in the final rankings under the Litkenhous Difference by Score system for 1940.
