Pete Sampras won his first championship since last year's U.S. Open, beating Brad Gilbert in three sets at the Volvo Tennis tournament in Los Angeles. Sampras, the second seed, defeated fourth-seeded Gilbert, 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3.
