All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Mangalagiri (AIIMS Mangalagiri or AIIMS-MG) is a medical research public higher education institute located in the Mangalagiri Tadepalle Municipal Corporation in Guntur District, in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is one of the four "Phase-IV" All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) announced in July 2014. It is located in proximity to the district headquarter Guntur. The foundation stone was laid by J. P. Nadda (Union Minister of Health), M. Venkaiah Naidu (Vice President of India) and N. Chandrababu Naidu (Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh). Along with Guntur Medical College, NRI Hospital and numerous reputed medical organisations in this region, the AIIMS-MG in Guntur contributes in making Guntur a medical powerhouse of the state.
History
In July 2014, in the budget speech for 2014–15, the Minister of Finance Arun Jaitley announced a budget of ₹500 crore (equivalent to ₹799 crore or US$96 million in 2023) for setting up four new AIIMS, in Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra and the Purvanchal region in Uttar Pradesh, the so-called "Phase-IV" institutes. In October 2015 the AIIMS at Manglagiri was approved by the cabinet at a cost of ₹1,618 crore (equivalent to ₹24 billion or US$290 million in 2023). Construction work on the permanent campus started in September 2017.
Academics
AIIMS Manglagiri commenced the 2018-19 academic session from a temporary campus at Siddhartha Medical College with 50 students. In the 2019-20 academic year, 50 more students joined the institute. The first batch at the permanent campus was the 2020-21 batch with 125 students. The outpatient department at the permanent campus started operating in March 2019. The inpatient department started in January 2021.
