Alpine Camp for Boys (also known as Alpine Camp and Camp Alpine) is a ACA certified Christian (non-denominational) sleep-away summer camp on Lookout Mountain, Alabama. It also is on the Little River and is closely related to the town of Mentone, Alabama. It is located across the river from DeSoto State Park. It is a camp for boys graduating from kindergarten to 9th grade (throughout different terms).

History

Colonel Milford Howard built a lodge cabin near the camp after claiming the land in 1928. Until 1934, it was operated as a resort, when Alice McVicar converted it to Alpine Lodge Camp for Girls. established by Richard "Dick" O'Ferrall and Rufus Hyde in 1959, after O'Ferrall and Hyde purchased the already existent Alpine Lodge Camp for Girls. The original camp size was 85 campers.

In 1962, Hyde retired from the camp, and O'Ferrall and his wife, Alice O'Ferrall bought the full camp, and they settled year round on the main camp grounds. The O'Ferralls had two daughters, Carter and Toy. Glenn Breazeale was a camper at Alpine, and later married Carter. In 2006, Dick O'Ferrall retired (but still remained on and around the camp), and Glenn and Carter became co-owners of the camp.

In 2022, Dick O'Ferrall passed away, but Alice O'Ferrall is still living.

Terms

Alpine has 2-month-long terms and a junior term during the summer, and two father-son camps throughout the year. Junior Term is a one week long camp for boys completing first through fifth grade. First and second terms are 28 days, and are for boys completing second through ninth. Both father-son camps are for boys completing kindergarten through ninth, and are two-day camps.

Camp activities

Campers during junior term select five activities, while father-son camps do not have set schedules. The 28-day and week-terms have schedules where campers choose their activities upon arrival at camp. The activities that all campers can participate in are: basketball, canoeing, crafts, earth games, fishing, horseback, minor sports, riflery, swimming, team sports, tennis, waterfront, and wilderness. Rising 5th graders can take part in climbing, disc sports (Frisbee 101), lacrosse, and project adventure (ropes course). Rising 6th graders are the only age at camp that can take Trash Can Band. Rising 7th graders can take guitar lessons (if they bring an acoustic guitar), Golf, Horsemanship, and Physical Training (PT-Weights and/or PT-Running). Mountain biking and Paddleboarding are the activities acquitted to rising 8th graders, and are the last two activities on the age scale.
