Arirang TV (Arirang International Broadcasting) (Korean: 아리랑 국제방송) is an international broadcasting station operated by the Korea International Broadcasting Foundation, based in Seoul, South Korea. It provides English-language information on Korean current events, culture, and history to regions around South Korea.

It began broadcasting in South Korea on February 3, 1997, with overseas broadcasting beginning on August 12, 1999. The name of the station comes from the traditional Korean folk song Arirang.

Three channels broadcast 24 hours a day in English, and provide subtitle services in Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, Vietnamese and Indonesian (multilingual subtitle service).

On May 9, 2022, Arirang International Broadcasting launched Arirang Español, a Spanish-language YouTube channel.

Arirang International Broadcasting currently has approximately 146.25 million viewing households in 107 countries around the world.

History

In January 2010, the network split its programming in two categories, news and non-news, with additional news bulletins and current affairs programs being added to the schedule, as well as more cultural programming. The Vietnamese drama series Chay An premiered on January 4, with subtitles in both Korean and English.

In 2011, after the Korean government was embroiled in an embezzlement scandal, suggestions had emerged for the merger of Arirang and KBS World, considering that Arirang, like many other English-language media outlets in South Korea, was suffering from lack of budget, manpower and content. The network recouped from its losses.

In January 2018, due to budget cuts, Arirang sacked 190 staff members and cut its number of programs in half from 36 to 18.

Channel

• Korea (domestic broadcasting): Launched on February 3, 1997. It is broadcast throughout South Korea through cable, satellite, and IPTV.
• World (foreign broadcasting): Launched on August 12, 1999. The main broadcasting language is English, and multilingual subtitle services are provided.
• UN In-house Network (overseas broadcasting): Launched on July 14, 2015. It can be viewed at the UN Headquarters in New York and broadcasts current affairs reports and liberal arts programs.

Arirang TV airs a variety of genres of programs covering the international economy, political situations, culture, and entertainment. It consists of programs suitable for viewers of various ages, as well as programs for domestic and foreign opinion leaders.

1) News

• Arirang NEWS: It mainly reflects Korean news in English, and the fields are diverse, including politics, world, economy, diplomacy, North Korea, lifestyle/culture, science, sports, and weather. Since North Korea-related news is broadcast in English, it is often quoted by foreign international broadcasters such as CNN or France 24.
• NEW DAY at Arirang: Morning news program.
• THE DAILY REPORT: Domestic and international news program.
• NEWS CENTER: Main news program.
• NEWs GENERATION: A soft news program that discusses hot current issues that the MZ generation is paying attention to with actors in their 20s and 30s from around the world.
• ISSUES & INSIDERS: A talkshow program discusses Korea and global major issues.
• WITHIN THE FRAME: Premium current affairs talkshow program.

• The Roundtable (Tuesday, 17:00 - 17:30 KST): A program to discuss the present and future of South Korea, which has grown into a world-leading country.
• THE GLOBALISTS (Wednesday, 17:00 - 17:30 KST): A program that looks back on the lives and experiences of global opinion leaders and talks about what South Korea's future vision is and where the country should go.
• SmartBiz Accelerators (Thursday, 17:00 - 17:30 KST): Introduces various domestic small and medium-sized companies and provides information on the company's technological competitiveness and prospects in the global market.

3) Entertainment

• After School Club (Tuesday, 13:00 - 14:00 KST): Go to one-way broadcasting! A music request show where viewers participate in video chat and communicate with K-pop stars. K-pop fans from around the world participate every week through Google Hangouts.
• Simply K-Pop (Friday, 13:00 - 14:00 KST): A music program that features performances by K-pop stars and communicates with the audiences.
• I'm Live (Thursday, 13:00 - 13:30 KST): A mini concert program performed live by talented domestic musicians. You can view the stage in 360 VR.
• RADIO' CLOCK (Everyday, 15.00 - 15.55 KST): A Korean music, content, and Korean cultural entertainment talk show where everything is visible and everyone can participate!
• SECRET TOUR (Monday, 02:00 - 03:00 KST): From K-Pop dance classes taught by stars to fierce battles between idols to taste Korean food! Global communication live content.
• K-Chat: Conversing in Korean (Weekday, 10:00–10:10 KST): A comprehensive Korean language program that allows you to learn Korean in various daily life situations.
