The Bhisiana Air Force Base was built in 1975. When it gained an important identity as one of the most strategic air force bases in India in 1980, the Indian Air Force allowed to operate private, charter and government flights to and from the air force base. To facilitate socio-economic development in the Malwa region and improve connectivity, the Government of India selected the air force base to be developed as a commercial airport along with continuing military operations, under the UDAN Scheme. This proposal was granted by the Indian Air Force, and hence, the passenger terminal was built and inaugurated by the former Minister of Civil Aviation, Ashok Gajapathi Raju, on 11 December 2016. Flights were started by Alliance Air the same day to Delhi. It was the only route until 2020, when the airline indefinitely suspended operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After a break of over three years, the regional carrier, FlyBig, restarted flight operations from the airport to Ghaziabad and at a future date to Dehradun, on 18 September 2023.
