Production
The boat was built by Beneteau in France and the United States. A total of 451 were completed during the design's production run from 1985 to 1993.
Design
The First 285 is a small recreational keelboat, built predominantly of glassfibre, with wood trim. It has a fractional sloop rig, an internally-mounted spade-type rudder and a fixed fin keel. It displaces 6,160 lb (2,794 kg) and carries 2,115 lb (959 kg) of ballast.
The boat has a draft of 5.25 ft (1.60 m) with the standard keel, 3.75 ft (1.14 m) with the optional shoal draft keel and 3.8 ft (1.2 m) with the optional wing keel.
The boat has a hull speed of 6.6 kn (12.22 km/h).
