Chai is an AI platform that uses large language models (LLMs) which users interact with, originally released in 2021. The principal feature of the app is to provide a platform for users to talk to AI characters. Chatbots are created by users by providing a personality and prompt of their choosing, and are subsequently published to the platform for other users to search and chat with. As of October 2022, the app had over 100,000 daily active users.
History
Chai was founded in Cambridge, England by CEO William Beauchamp. The company later relocated to Palo Alto, California.
In 2023, Chai raised a seed funding round which resulted in a valuation of $450 million.
Controversies
In December 2024, the Washington Post reported that authorities in Belgium launched an investigation into the company following a complaint. The investigation, started in July 2024,after a Dutch man died by suicide following extensive chats on the Chai app.
